Well my Z3 has left a little puddle of oil back at home. Looking under the car this is what I can see (See pictures)

The car has been running fine. The only thing that is different is the oil, going from 10w-30 Halfords Part-synthetic oil to 5w-40 Shell Fully-synthetic oil. I suspect this is part of the issue?

Is it just the oil or an old part that the new oil has affected?

Thanks

Seeing as the oil has been changed was it all put back together correctly, the filter housing could be leaking, I don't think the actual difference in oil could cause the leak

Hi mate, I remember other 1.9 owners having oil leaking from the oil filter housing/cyl. block joint. Going thinner on the engine oil could well be the agent which has made the leak show itself more. Best to clean down the area of the engine and then run the engine to trace the leak.

Tony.

ps. No luck with the 206 Alejandro, sorry. Offer stands for when I get home though.

Looks like a bad leak, check that the filter housing is done up correctly and check for leaks around the units gasket No 6 on the diagram here http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CM12-EUR-12-1999-Z3-BMW-Z3_19&diagId=11_6183
If the oil has just been changed make sure the filter housing screw top o ring is intact and not been cut when it was being replaced.

Best spray some degreaser on to clean it up then run the car and look for where its leaking from.

Check my warning thread at bottom of page 2 titled "What A Shame", such a leak can be disasterous if not sorted. Not that difficult to do.

That was the first thing I thought. But then we don’t know for sure that’s where the leak is coming from. Fair bet though. So caution indeed!

Oh no! My poor baby :( Definitely don't want that to happen. I'll give it a clean and see where its coming from. Maybe a trip to the London Zedshed is in order

Update: So I can't really get anything around the area to clean it up but I started the car and struck oil. The tiny bit of rich black by the oil filter is freshly leaked oil. It just fills up in that dip in the housing.

It seems to be coming from a joint, maybe 4 and 5 here? http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CM12-EUR-12-1999-Z3-BMW-Z3_19&diagId=11_6183

Definitely not dripping down from the filter cap and the housing doesn't seem to be leaking either. Bare in mind this is all that i can see, I can't get under the car so it may be that the lower section if the housing is leaking and I can't see it.

I have more engine oil to top it up, should I rethink the trip to Duxford? It's only an hour there?

Thanks

Looks like the gasket has failed between the oil filter housing and the block, best strip it down clean the mating surfaces and refit with a new gasket. Best ask on here if you should use a gasket sealing compound on the new gasket, if you do I would use blue hylomar.

Agree - while you're in there and have the body off worth changing bush spring and seal rings- parts on pics are for M44.fullsizeoutput_14.jpeg IMG_1808.JPG IMG_1809.JPG.

On paper gaskets I always just apply a very thin smear of normal, grease, this works two fold. 1, it helps seal the gasket and 2, it will come apart easily without tearing the gasket apart. Something I was taught by my late father in law who was trained to do it in the REME.

Yes that's everything. But it's cheaper from the dealer and you know you are getting the right parts
