We use these at work. Handy thing to have, you can use them to bleed brakes by vacuum rather than.n pressure at the m/cyl.

2 or 3 oil services and you're on even ground then. Hmmmm, maybe on the list next year when I'm back and have the time to do this.

Edit: Thanks Mods

I like it! The fact that you can do other things as well is even better. Best of all is the ROI after about 3 oil changes.

I wonder if it gets all the bits caught in the bottom of the sump. Does the Z3 have a magnetic sump plug?

Lots of the garages I visit use them, the one I saw today was by Sealey. Can withdraw brake fluid from master cylinder prior to retracting pistons into calipers to prevent overflow.
Another great bit of kit but costly is a hand held thermal imaging camera. Great for identifying blocked radiators and general coolant flow plus loads of other stuff.

On my smart car I had to use one of these, as there is no sump plug. It worked really well. Have to hand pump to get the syphon, but easy to use.
I sold it to a guy that had a vauxhall van where the sump nut was jammed and he didnt want to take the chance of cracking the sump.

We have them at work but don't use that much ( we got them in to use on cars with no sump plug ) .
Problem is the tube has to go down the dipstick tube to suck out the oil but that is not always the lowest part of the sump .
The dipstick doesn't have to be at lowest point for example.
The sump full holds 5 ltr.
Max to min on dipstick is say 1ltr
Then you have a bit below min mark so totally off the dipstick a sump could still have 3 - 3.5 ltr of oil in it so the dipstick tube is positioned in convenient place but not necessary at lowest point so you could sook out all the oil you could get to and still leave half a litre in a corner that is at the lowest point where sump plug is . ( even then oil can be left have drained oil at sump plug before sump removal only to take off and still find oil in them )

Absolutely, this is why we first had one at work, Smart cars, had no drain plug (the later models do). There was a discussion on here a couple of years ago about main dealers using this type of oil removal on servicing :(

Yet another use is for draining water from the cylinder block when you have removed the head say, or for lowering the level in a water pump housing after removal to save water inclusion in the gasket area. They do have many good applications.

I prefer to use the conventional method, get the engine nice and hot, remove the sump plug and let everything drain out. with those things, you are bound to leave some in the sump and any rubbish in the oil will have settled to the bottom.

I alternate oil changes. One with one of these beasties and the traditional method the next time.

Surely the reason for the oil change is to clear out the old (and the crap) and replace it with new. This doesnt clear out the old!

The strange thing is that new BMW's don't have dipsticks, so the main dealers are going to have to go back to doing it properly.

It is debatable about BMW not having dipsticks lol But yes they will have to get their hands dirty lol

I would not use one of these to change my oil, but, as I said they do have other uses.
