For the cost of what they charge to change it, i would take it to a garage and just tell them you want the best for the car and that you want to see what they are using. I cant remember what my indie used but i know it wasnt cheap and it also keeps my service book upto date :)

Personally I always go for 5w40 Fuchs SuperSyn. It's a good spec and wont break the bank. Think it's about £25 for 5 lites with Opie at the moment :-bd

I use Halfords 5W/30 fully synthetic which was £22/5litres with a trade card.
AFAIK their oil is produced by Comma and it seems to work ;)
So long as you ensure that it has the correct BMW rating (LL04) any brand should be OK.
Previously the indy that I used had some huge drum of Mobil that he flogged out at £9.07/litre + VAT + Labour.
Now I change my own :-bd

Recycled metal cutting fluid from our NC machine at work.
I do filter it first though, just in case.

:)) Partially true story, many years ago a mate had clapped out Ford Angria that leaked oil like a sieve and couldn't afford oil to top-up so used cutting fluid. Got us down into London one night where it ground to a halt. Still there as far as I know! :car)

i bought some castrol edge 5-30w from halfrauds. Cost nigh on £60 for 8L (comes in 4L cans for some reason). Combined with a new filter it cost allmost as much as a full oil change at a garage but atleast i know the oil and worksmanship is decent. While the people are here, whats the halfords trade card discount like and is it worth having some business cards made up in order to get one?

Some things are better than others with a card, I bought Castrol 75w90 gearbox oil the other day and it worked out cheaper than Opie, and no delivery charge. Other savings are not so great.

Expect about 15 - 20% on average depending on what you need.

If you can get a card it's worth it ! You can't use it in conjunction with their special offers which sometimes work out cheaper. I thought I'd get a free torch with my 5 litres but sadly not. However I saved £16 on the oil and got the torch for £8 ie 20% off

I got a few main dealer invoices with my car and they all state Shell Helix Ultra was used.

The 6 cylinder lump takes a ridiculous 6.5 litres of the stuff! £££££££££££££££kerching!! One 5 litre bottle ain't enough!

I'll have a go at most jobs regardless of size or complexity (sometimes I even finish them) but if you have to put her in for an MOT at your local trusted independant anyway then you might as well get an oil and filter service done at the same time. They buy their oil in dustbin sized cans at much better prices than we can get it and will charge you only for what they use or possibly even a flat rate.

Then you can spend more weekends doing other things... :coolsteer) :beer
