Oil change question

After 3 months of fun trouble free driving I am changing the M44 engine oil for the first time. I am following the Bentley Service Manual.

Why is a new sealing washer and torque plug required? Wouldn't I be able to clean up the existing ones?

Maybe a little OCD but would like to know the reason and not able to find the answer.
Thank you
Marvin

Hi Marv, don't worry the filter comes with new washer and the two rubber o rings. On the other hand nobody do the torque with the wrench, just common sense tighten, but the manual is obliged to say the torque, for accuracy. And of course you can use the old washer if it's not damaged (too splashed).

The copper washer is a crush washer and as you tighten the sump plug it should deform slightly to the shape of the sump and plug to give a better seal.
As @Zeti says they usually come with the filter.

@Zeti @Brian4 - Appreciate the information. Previous owner took very good care of the Z3 , the M44 is very clean without any fluids leaks, not even a spot between any gaskets. Trying to keep it that way.
