Just wondering if any one can help
My obd scanner won't connect I have tried on both ports

Z3 1.8 2000

Reader powers up ok at both ports just won't connect

I have read about a fuse to check ?

What else should I check?

Reader is working on other car just wondering if it's not bmw compatible

Seems that there's alot of people with the same issue

What are you trying to read from the obd port as it will only read engine codes. The 20 pin connector under the bonnet is the one to read most codes.

Bmw only put the obd socket in to comply with new rules and regs that came out at the time and even then only made it as functional as the regs demanded so like Brian says you can only connect to the engine module and even then I think it is still limited to the point it is practically useless. 20 pin connector under the bonnet is the one to use and ignore the obd socket as it is a waste of time. Are you using an obd to 20 pin adapter like this one;

As most generic code readers should be able to read something but you maybe unlucky and have one that doesn't.

Yip that's the connector I got :)
Was thinking of getting the bmw c110 reader but want to make sure it's not something else first

if your car is starting it can only be one of two things, either the port is broken or reader is not Compatible.

@zedonist posted a very good thread on using a wireless ELM reader which you can either use an iPad (wifi version) or Android (Bluetooth version) tablet that work quite well with such apps as DashCommand, Torque etc. that are quite inexpensive really and offer a lot more functionality over the little handheld readers, kind of half way between them and full blown PC diagnostics such as INPA and Carsoft.

Let me know if you get problems, will talk you through it, the Bluetooth Elm327 is for use with Android devices btw. If you are using apple you will need the wifi version.
