Thought I'd copy @g8jka and fit a Japanese/American style rear number plate plinth. Thinking behind this was that I wanted to make the zed more mine by personalising it. I had taken a 5 digit number plate off a breaker (so no double stacking the digits) and thought that coupled with a different look to the plate surround it would enhance the zed along with the 'M' mirrors I'd fitted. Quick look on realoem to get the part number was followed by a call to those jolly nice people at Sopers BMW (they support the forum). Yes everything including the proper screws and washers were available albeit in Germany. A few pence over £30 including delivery and I ordered one, it arrived pretty quick.

The 'ears' each side of the main plate holder are held flat against the bumper face by a screw that goes in from behind the bumper - that's going to be a bumper off job I thought but was wrong. Access is fine behind the exhaust and lowering the spare wheel (no need to remove) for the other side gave good access to put that screw in.
What do peeps think?

Nice, fits better than mine as I have the aero bumper and it wasn't designed for that. I have no holes either in the bumper to attach the 'ears' but some slim double sided tape hold mine on fine. I cut the bottom off mine so it's suits a standard height plate better and not the square type. Be good to see how it looks with the plate on.

I didn’t realise they were that cheap from BMW :banghead: got mine off eBay from one of the places that must be building the Ferrari/Cobra kits, their importing LHD donor cars from the states then selling off the body parts so I asked if they would sell the plate panel separately and they said yes, paid £25.

would you know what width your number plate is ? i have

S39 KGC and wondering if i can get a legal plate to fit ?
I've used these people https://www.myshowplates.com/number-plate-designer.asp a couple of times, no problems with them, and there's a wide list of options available. Have a play on the designing bit. WARNING you may find yourself ticking more boxes than you thought you needed.:rolleyes:Go on, ask me how I know.

Short answer is no, you wont get a 6 digit number on a plate that short unless you have two 1's like Devon Z & I dont think his is legal either as you are supposed to have 11mm between the edge of the letter to the edge of the plate but who would check that measurement.

Legal plate with six 50mm letters/numbers all correctly spaced would be 399mm (15.7in)

• characters must be 79mm tall
• characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be 50mm wide
• the character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
• the space between characters must be 11mm
• the space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
• the margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
• vertical space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 19mm.

It’s 343mm wide, it’s my original plate cut down to fit and no there isn’t 11mm space at either side but to be honest it doesn’t keep me awake at night;) you want to see the size of my front plate:whistle:

Your going to have to go with a Japan import size plate.

You can have any sized plate you want (within reason) I suspect the police have better things to worry about (speed cameras not withstanding) if you say that speed cameras can read the rear plate on a bike then it can rear that size of plate on a car? All you need is to have one which meets the criteria on the day it is tested (so you don't put pressure on a tester for the sake of your own vanity).

Tony.

Sorry not so Tony the law dictates by DVLA the requirements set out in the thread above so the plate size is dictated by the letter number sizes and spaces you cant legally use smaller letters or spaces so you cant have any size plate you like.
