What are they? I have pheasants next door attracted by the bird feeders, lots of squawking early in the morning. In fact living backing onto some woods and near a river it sometimes feels like a wildlife reserve, with with birds, hawks, squirrels, hedgehogs, foxes, etc . I had to put raptor stickers on the windows to stop geese, swans, pigeons etc crashing into the glass.

I think they’re a type of Partridge, not the common variety, but when they flew down to the field they ran like Partridges do.

We've got 2 wood pigeons that'll soon be the size of a turkey the amount of grub they put away.

Pretty confident in saying they are Red Legged Partridges @t-tony. Had some in our garden a number of years ago,

Cheers Bryan, not seen them around here before. I wondered if someone had lost them.

Tony.

Very common across the east of England, but not your usual garden visitors.
Many years ago we had a pair of Turtle Doves visit over the course of a few days, until one was dispatched by our local Sparrowhawk. I'd never seen one before and haven't seen one since.

We also have a pair of Turtle Doves hanging around but the much bigger Woodies scare them of. We have Sparrow Hawks around here too. We remember Gary as a toddler watching one hover and commenting "That bird's not working!" and we've never let him forget it.

Hope they taste better than lake fish.

after washing the cars, I am regularly visited by a large shitehawk.

Reminds me of my late Father-in-law Pete, one of his favourite terms. To which Mother-in-law used to say "OOOH Reg!"

Tony.

They really amuse me the way they run. I don’t suppose everyone knows that a sitting Partridge will fein injury if a predator approaches their nest by dragging a wing and walking away from the nest. After its lured the predator away it runs like hell for a bit then flies, always away from its nest. Today’s natural history lesson.
