Noisy Wind!!

So, I’ve recently been bowling along the A-roads of deepest Essex only to experience what I can only describe as (and no offence meant here) a ‘farting’ noise coming from the front edge of the hood at speeds of ever so slightly above the national speed limit (honest, guv!).

Initially my reactions were my bodily functions had finally given up but fortunately that was not the case, a relief at my age! :ymblushing:

Investigating the problem I undone the clamps, wiped the top surface of the screen surround and the front edge of the hood and re-clamped but to no avail. The clamps seem secure and tight. The ‘noise’ is not constant so it may be a speed, wind, resonance issue.

My next move is to smear silicone grease along both surfaces of the hood and screen surround to see if that improves matters…failing that it’s turning the radio up or having the hood down constantly. :-ss

I wondered if anyone else had experienced this small, but irritating problem.

Yes, that's it....(actually on picnics I still do it)...can also be done with tissue paper and a comb!!........and of course with a Z3 raised roof it seems. Looks like ice on my hat and a red nose if I want to keep the 'farty' noise away )

I get a high pitch whistle from cross winds (not a farting sound). It's bloody annoying.
So other than roof down, the's no solution then?

if you tape up the front edge of your roof where it meets the wind screen frame you might be able to isolate the specific area its coming from by removing bits little by little, then its just a case of identifying the problem and finding a solution. I get a slight whistling noise from mine at the front where the window meets the top of the roof, might be worth just dropping the window down half an inch to see if it goes away.

Is your screen a BMW screen or a third party replacement? I had similar issues and before the stealer even looked at it they said i bet it's not a BMW screen as they had seen the issue on a few cars. I'd had a cracked screen previous to the noise (was more of a whistle) and sure enough it wasn't BMW glass.

So got the screen replaced with the correct glass but I still have a slight wind noise at around 60 and above but i think this was down to the fitters not sealing the top off side edge correctly. Anyhow the whistle went completely and so i may try sticking the rubber to the glass in the top corner to see if that cures the extra wind noise.

Rod i had this exact problem on my 2.8..
I found it to be the rubber seal wear it meets the back edge of the window screen suround..
I eyed along it from the side and could see a slight rased section where the noise seemed to be coming from.. What i did was to stick a little bit of silicone sealer in the rain channel and it was problem solved!!

Glad I found this post. I find that if I get a strong cross wind I get the high pitched bzzzzz/whistle type sound. It sounds like the noise you can make by putting a leaf between your thumbs and blowing through it [Australian type of call from the old days]. Interestingly I can travel at 120 kph with no issues, just the cross wind situation brings the grief.

Any type of wind noise can usually be traced to a sealing problem. As they age they get hardened up a bit so no flex or compression. I've noticed the mention of a product others have used for this that rejuvinates the seals. I think Chris at Summit should be able to help or IMS Gazhyde uses it. I'm sure others will soon come along and provide the product name. HTH JIM

The usual suggestion for a rubber seal conditioner is a product called Gummi Pfledge (literally translates as 'rubber care').

There are other products which do the same, but this one is pretty widely available.
