I got my car back from the garage today.

Bmw z3 1.9

Its making a horrific noise coming from what sounds like near the steering wheel, steering column. Engine bay.

Its worse with the doors shut. Car only went in with a knocking noise at front drivers side which they think is engine mount as cant see anything else wishbones etc. It only does it from a full left turn on 1 corner to a full right turn on another (and not everytime) if anyone knows? Its one solid clunk when it does.

Also it had an exhaust bracket as was making a bit of a metal on metal noise at 3k rpm ish.

But now this. Its worse when the car is idling. It doesnt sound electrical but its like popcorn is popping in the microwave and it didnt have this issue before it went in the garage.nothing is physically shaking in the cabin that i can see.

Any help?? Ita going back the garage at 10am tomorrow so il keep you all posted.

Thanks

Neil.

Update

I think its exhaust related as it sounds more like under the footwell drivers side and when i try listen under the car it sounds like its coming from the exhaust. Maybe the sound is just travelling????

Finally got car to the garage amongst the bad weather.

They adjusted all the exhaust supports and positioning and the noise has gone so must have been catching.

They did say my catalytic convertor could be on way out and rattling and making the raspy metal noise i hear when i accelerate... so that will be on the list to get at somepoint.

Thanks for updating on the outcome. Had similar on a previous car, garage fitted new back box but not tightened everything up, so was banging against the floor pan every time I put my foot down. They nipped everything up and all good.

Glad you got it sorted

Glad Tey got to the bottom of it Neil, although the sad thing is they should never have turned it out in that condition.

It does not need to be "type approved" for your car Neil. If you notice an issue when you collect it, if possible go straight back. That's the best way but I hope you don't need to.

Excellent. Yea the only reason i didnt hear the noise last time was i had heaters on 4 and drove home whilst warming up. Then got to my drive and turned heaters off let it idle and i was like What the hell is that noise. I got a recording off it but dont know if can put on here. Cheers

I changed my cat for a type none approved also a 1.9 as it was starting to rattle 3 months later couldn’t get it through the emissions mot test the cat was useless I would definitely recommend a type approved cat as I have now done.

I found that only an OEM cat would work for the M44 engine. Tried two others which didn't work well enough to get within MOT levels.
Good luck!

There's a reason why the scumbags steal cats, if you go with a cheap one there's also a reason for it.

Rest of the exhaust I'll be comfortable taking a risk, but the cat I wouldn't at all.

Im happy to pay more for a good product.

Does anyone have any links to any for the 1.9 16v pre facelift 1998.

Nothing flagged on emissions on the mot last year so its probably fine just a horrible noise.

Thanks

Just to report. New catalytic converter (type approved) fitted along with new middle piece between cat and backbox and all is fixed and sounding great.

Thanks.

Sounds good (no pun intended). Have you had the emissions tested?
