Dear friends,
My car is 1996 BMW Z3 1.9l. Recently i had a crutch release problem and the crutch plate is also replaced. I just drive one month but yesterday, I felt a first gear suddenly lost a torque. I run my engine around 4000-5000 ppm but I do not feel a big torque. 2nd and the rest of gear is ok. One day after, i brought my car to the shop but the problem is almost recovered when they checked it but I still feel 1st gear is 1litter car. I believe we feel a bigger torque on 1st than 2nd gear. I suspect the old leak to the crutch plate but can not see it in the crutch housing.

Any advice is appreciated.

Kenny

Let me make it clear. Currently, I feel 1st gear has a less torque than 2nd , which is wired.

If you only replaced the clutch driven plate and not the pressure plate as well that is most likely where your problem lies . You should always replace the entire 3 pieces of the clutch at the same time (if not for the simple reason that the gear box has to come out for each item?) and a thorough inspection of the Dual Mass Flywheel at the same time.

That points to clutch “slip” .

Tony,
Thanks for your advice. Yes, 3 pieces are replaced together by my car shop technician. I believe they checked at the installation but something was wrong with the installation ? Does it explain only 1st gear lower torque?

Regards
Kenny

It depends on what was “wrong” with the installation Kenny. One other possible fault could be the hydraulic hose at the slave cylinder. Sometimes they fail inside and although they look ok from outside they can restrict the release of fluid from the slave cylinder. That in effect gives a slow release of the clutch which can initiate slip.

Tony,
Big thanks for your advice. I now suspect the problem is at a clutch release (master cylinder?). Today, Day3 after the incident, the 1st gear torque is better than yesterday. It could be air in the horse when I had a problem at Day 1?

Hose not Horse. Haha! In Japanese, it is a same pronunciation and I always made them confused. Sorry!
