I bought my 2.5 z4 over a year ago for 3 grand .When looking at it i dont think theres a sports car of that vintage comes anywhere near it .Six cylinder, stunning body, and a close relation to the marvellous z8.The mk2 onwards mx5s are to clinical ,they dont have a premium badge, and they are only four cylinder .Any other car for same price i dont think there is better value?Im a lotus fan, and the mk2 elan would interest me, but then theres that awful shape to consider.)Of course it would be dearer than the 2003 z.ps The lotus Elise is a great shape, but the prices i wouldnt pay.so i think i will be sticking with 6 cylinder zs in the future.

And the Elise as a highly focused sports car for the twisty stuff, very little creature comforts. The 6cyl Zed is a great compromise.

Very good value for money, sold my Z3 and bought my Z4 for half the money in 2019. I didn't set out to buy a cheap Z4, in fact I first looked at coupes, but decided my sportscar had to be a soft top. Then I bought the car that I thought was in the best condition for the money. I actually paid a deposit on a 3.0 L, but changed my mind and went back the next day having thought more about some issues. I have noticed prices starting to rise for E85 Z4 s , but they are still super value. You can find a good one, but there are a lot of abused neglected ones about.
