Price of fuel has sky rocketed Dawn, about the same here. Even higher where we were last Wednesday, around the £1.40 mark. Not sure when the E10 fuel will be served up, won't be long though.

In North Wales back in Aug/Sept I was paying £1.229/litre Shell VPower last week it was £1.459/Litre.

My Z3 does not like any fuel except Shell VPower or BP equivalent. On Tesco best I thought I had developed an engine fault.

So E10 unleaded on the forecourt on Thursday. The Government’s website says that all BMWs irrespective of year of manufacture are fine. Has anyone checked their User Manual for info on the octane?

My user manual recommends 98 octane but says that 95 is acceptable with a minimum of 91 in exceptional circumstances. I nearly always use Shell V power.

Here’s the relevant page from my car’s User Manual. I hope this helps.

95 is E10, 98 is E5. E 10 is alright but thhe Ethanol may damage seals in some older engines, none of our engines are affected. The only thing is the higher ethanol content gives less efficiency leading to slightly higher fuel consumpttion but it would proably not be noticeable.

I will let you know as I filled tank to go go to Zedfest with E5
Refilled just before arrival and it's E10 that's in the tank for the return journey.

I seem to remember reading the performance and efficiency losses could be as much as 10%
Most articles say you will use more fuel and end up paying more.
As land used to grow crops for ethanol isnt being used for food, possibly increasing food prices, it tends to be pretty intensive too.
Add into the mix the energy, and pollution to produce the ethanol. Really does make you wonder if its worth it.

Also many manufacturers wont give straight answers whether older cars will be able to use it without problems - ask em to put it in writing ;)
For the extra cost and performance increase I wouldnt risk it

I couldn't agree more but there is no arguing with the climate change brigade.

Maybe I'm just looking at this all a bit too simplistically but didn't we have a similar uproar over the move from Leaded to Unleaded petrol?

We managed to survive that!

Only difference was that the social media back then was moaning to a neighbour, work colleagues or mates in the pub!

True, but it was a simple fix in most cases, by retarding the timing by a couple of degrees back then. I've not found the distributor on my Z yet.;)=))
