Hi All
My name is Rob I live in Llanelli South Wales . I own a 04 Plate 2.2 Z4. I have owned the car for nearly 4 years and really enjoy driving it particularly in the summer months with the hood down. I cant say the last 4 years have been trouble free motoring with many parts replaced but yet again it is an old car. However things have gone from bad to worse since the Winter, due to an accident at work I had to take the car off the road in October 2019 I had to store it outdoors but under a cover. It stayed like that until February of this year when I was well enough to go out to start it surprisingly it started first time but the engine was running very rough with the rev counter fluctuating wildly it was a heck of a job to keep the revs up. A mate of mine put a diagnostic test on it using Delphi software and identified the following error codes. 278c air intake temp sensor intermittent, and 2783 Air mass meter (hot film) intermittent, so I changed the MAF for a Ridex one and also there was a split on the air intake hose so that was replaced, the running of the engine has improved but nowhere near right. I have noticed quite a bit of smoke coming from the back of the engine drivers side when the engine warms up, any ideas anyone I am getting to my wits end with the car now. I have heard in these forums of a smoke test to identify these problems but have never done one. Help anyone please

Hi, welcome from Mansfield

My next thoughts would be some fresh fuel, check spark plugs and fuel filter.

Smoke from engine most likely an oil leak which has built up while it was stood from rocker cover gasket. There's a couple of guys down your way who have smoke testers and may be able to help you, maybe not right now as things are though.

Tony.

Hi many thanks for your reply, yes I have cleared the codes and they didn't return thankfully, Not sure where to go from here. Judging by comments I have received, a smoke test might be the way to go next but I have never done one before and don't know where to get the kit from

Hi @Rob 2.2, no problems with mine, but it has been well looked after. Had a Z3 2.2i before this and that was very good also.
