Frankie, top quality as usual. I hope that wasn't a Florida black bear! There are some not too far from our place. We will have to try a Skype catch up when I get over there and be on the same time, hopefully with Jim too.:)

Hi Guys,

I'm pretty new to bmw, had a 320 coupe back in the day, i've wanted a bmw again for some time, so am now looking to purchase a used z3.
I've got two prospects at the moment that are near me.
One is a '00 2.3 with 103k miles Looks excellent condition, & supposedly in excellent condition, asking $6400.
The other is a 97 with 140k miles, 4cyl, recently replaced clutch, asking $5200. This is $1k over kbb value, so i would certainly not pay this price regardless :)

The '00 is a little out of my price range, but may be the better car overall. The 4cyl might suit my driving & gas sipping needs a little better, though the gas savings really isn't a deal breaker at all.

I'm posting a couple of photos.

Any advice as to what I should look for, that could help me spot something I should run from?

Thanks,

Hi Joe, its Frankie from the other side of the GSP. Glad to have you on the forum. I know the feeling when buying a car you have your heart set on. Sometimes you feel you have to grab it before someone beats you to it. Don't let this control you, not to say that it has. Don't be in any rush. There's plenty of cars out there and there will be more coming. Its the end of the season. Selling time. There's more to choose from than you can imagine. The nicest cars are from the southern states, esp. Florida. RUST FREE!!. Many is the time that I've flown down to Florida and picked up a super clean car. Bide your time and get what you want at the price YOU want. You're running the show. If you find something you want and you want to fly down and drive it back, I'm off at noon on Mondays and off Tuesdays and Wednesdays. I can go down there with you and help you drive it back. I've gone down on a 12:30 PM flight, looked at the car, bought it, and started driving it back arriving Tues. night in Jersey without stopping. Plenty of good cars around locally. Let me know if I can help. Frankie

Good write up Frankie! I agree totally. With the cheap flights you have in the USA it makes buying a car from out of state very economical and doable. In my case, buying in the UK was the best bang for my buck I could get after researching Canada and the USA. I bought my car bAsed upon building a relationship with the sellers son over the net and asking lots of questions, many that had nothing pertaining to the car itself. We went through a family member's lose to cancer, a near fatal heart attack by the father and some cheerier moments after nights of both of us imbibing. I gained a trust and felt confident with my decision to buy. This was backed up by the valet service recommended to me by a forum member, Chris, as Sean literally took the car apart to decontaminate it. He took 153 pics as he progressed which proved how clean and clear of rust the car was. Naturally in a car of it's age there are a few dings and dents but overall I'm very pleased with what I got for my money.
I guess what I'm trying to get across is, as Frankie says, don't be in a hurry and check things out. If something doesn't feel right your gut reaction is probably right. Good luck and hopefully you'll fine the gem you're looking for soon. Jim
