I recently decided I was done riding motorcycles so swapped my Harley for a 1997 1.9l Z3.

Previous owner recently put a new top and new tires on it and completely went through the front end. He was told the top end of the engine was rebuilt but no paperwork. 176,000 miles and it runs good and doesn’t use oil. Gets perky at 4500 RPM.

I was a mechanic if in a past life and still enjoy working on cars so will probably ask my share of questions.

check the DISA valve, quite easy to do, located drivers side, next to the abs, plastic box that sits under the intake “snail”.

Welcome from me in Wales, UK.
Since you were a mechanic no doubt you are the owner of a good toolbox, if you lack a code reader in your toolbox I can reccomend a Creator 310+ handheld for the BMW range. I also run BMW INPA and BMW Scanner 1.4 on a laptop which are also good to have. All available on ebay or Amazon for little outlay. I keep looking at the latest tablet scanners from Autel and Scantool in particular for changing Vin numbers in Airbag and other modules when used modules are fitted to the car and require coding to the car, not had any success doing this with the software I already have in particular on a Z4, suceeded doing it on a Z3 however.
I really can't afford to invest in one of these tablets just for that function when what I have already can do everything else on my Z3 and Z4 cars.

I will, thanks. Do you say this because it should come on stronger at a lower rpm?

I’ve been reading about BMW-specific scanners, thanks for the recommendations. I see it’s almost a. requirement to have a good one to work on theee cars.

It certainly can make life easier. I have a Foxwell NT530.
