I messaged Gazhyde about the possibility of having a new section for rebodies and the response was positive and hopefully, it will be up and running in the next few weeks.
Currently, these builds are in the progress section but as more threads are added they drop out of sight, with a dedicated section it should be much easier to follow builds and the information easier for builders to find.
This worked very well on the Madaboutkitcars site but unfortunately due to attacks on the site they have had to stop taking on new members, this means no new builds so the site is now almost dead but it does contain lots of information on past builds.
There are forums on Facebook but they are as useful as a chocolate teapot, they are very few build details and mainly pictures of starting and finished cars, looks good but very little in the way of help and information. The way Facebook sets it all out is enough to drive you mad.
Obviously, on this forum the builds will be limited to Zed cars, most are based on Z3's but I know of at least one kit in development for the Z4, a Corvette.
For this forum I suggest that we stick to rebodies, not kit cars. A rebody is a car that has had removable body panels replaced with new panels, so long as the main body shell has not been cut and modified then you do not need an IVA test, just a couple of forms and photos sent to the DVLA to register the new body style, it doesn't even cost anything whereas an IVA test is expensive and hard to pass.
Due to certain manufacturers going after replica manufacturers you sometimes have to hunt down your desired kit, a lot of kits are not replicas, just built in the style of a 60's sports car that 99% of the public couldn't afford, it's not about trying to pass a car off as an original. Always best not to post pictures of cars wearing badges that they shouldn't be wearing. My own car has taken it's cue from a 250SWB, however this was only ever made as a coupe and not a convertible so it cannot be considered a replica and doesn't have any badging that it shouldn't have. Whenever, and I do mean whenever I go out in it I get asked what it is, I always say it is a modified Z3 and the response is always positive, people seem to appreciate the fact that you built it and make it unique, more so than the fact it is a copy or even worse.......a fake.
So what can you build?
On a Z3
Cobra
Z3gato Coupe or Convertible
250swb Convertible (Isobella)
250 GT (California cruiser)
Z300s convertible
507 convertible In final stages of development
Z75 Coupe and Convertible
Bertini
On the Z4
Corvette Coupe in development
Photos to come on the new thread.
The Cobra is probably the most popular model, cheap, just over £3k for the kit, very simple and quick to assemble.
There are some very nice example around but I haven't seen a full build thread on one which is a shame and hopefully this will be rectified with the new forum section.
Insurance can also be cheaper, I pay £170 for mine, it doesn't use NCB so it can be run as a second car without costing a fortune.
My son who was 21 was quoted £1k for a Z3 2.2 but it dropped to £700 for a kit with a higher value, this was on a normal policy with 2 years NCB.
