Hi all just wanted to introduce myself and my new ride. Bought a 97 z3 2.8 a month ago and I absolutely love the car. 89000 miles and exceptional condition. I’ve been busy detailing every weekend and can’t wait for the weather here to warm up so I can take her for a drive. Ordered some parts from bimmerworld to bring the car back to top shape , just the usual control arm bushings (slight shimmy at 40mph) water pump , thermostat w/aluminum housing , new aluminum pulley and belt. I’m finding the information on this thread invaluable as I work on the car. I bought my wife a 2015 328i xdrive sportline 3 years ago and its a fantastic car to drive but it’s still under warranty and doesn’t need any work hence the new toy. While I have your attention maybe someone could enlighten me as to the purpose of one of the knobs on the dash. Check out attached pic.

Hi, welcome from Mansfield - UK

Have you got an aftermarket stereo?

The dial is not OEM. Looks like a remote dial for an amp.

Hi and welcome from me near Lincoln UK. My old Z3 didn't have that switch/control. Definitely looks aftermarket or accessory to me. Some type of rotary rheostat for an Amp maybe or dash illumination dimmer?

Tony.

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I live in Thunder Bay Ontario about 15 hours north of Toronto. My fog light switch is on the other side of the dash and the car has the stock stereo. The car is originally from Texas and there are two separate controls to the switch, the back dial with three different settings and a front rotary dial?

That might suggest a central "off" position and then a left and right position. Does the car have standard heated seats? or maybe some aftermarket ones.

Tony.

ps. Maybe even parking lights?

No heated seats and the parking lights are with the headlight control on the left side of the dash. I know the car was built in South Carolina in June of 97 Is there a difference between the North American models and the ones over the pond?

Different market spec but they were all built in SC. My next best guess is try to follow the wiring (again, assuming there are wires connected to this switch) and see where it leads to. No info in the book pack that came with the car?

Tony.
