Hi all

We've inherited our Z3 from my partner's parents. They'd enjoyed the car for around 10 years having bought her from the wife of a BMW dealership owner in Northern Ireland who'd had her from new. Whilst she has 113k miles on her, for the past 10 years, the inlaws have only been 500-700 miles per annum as they were using it as a summers evening drive about. Whilst this has kept her in mint condition, the long drive back from NI to Cardiff has unearthed a couple of niggles that the low mileage, long periods of not being driven have likely contributed to.

1) Rattling from the exhaust. Think the baffles (or something metallic) has broken off inside and is rattling about. For a brief moment, said piece became lodged in the pipe and we lost any acceleration... pulled over, gave it a mo and it cleared, although the foreign object continues to bounce about, especially at low revs.

2) Bulb out on the right-hand side of the speedo. Not looked at fuses as yet, but suspect it's the bulb.

3) The main light switch is flakey... at the start of our road trip back to Wales, we set off at 2 am. Probably the first time in a long while the lights have been used... and they were intermittent. A slight play on the knob and they would flicker, so once I got them on, I left the switch as it was.

4) The previous owner had a Motorola Bluetooth 'thingy' fitted (drivers side footwell). Not saying it's linked, but there is no power to the cigarette lighter, therefore it could be a possibility that power has been taken from the lighter to power the Bluetooth device. I did change the fuse before setting off as I needed this to charge my phone/sat nav for the journey home. Alas, not the fuse... it remains without power.

So, apart from that, very happy with our new addition, although any advice, wiring guides, how-to guides or general know-how on getting the above fixed would be really appreciated. Please note, I'm handy with DIY, not much experience at all with cars... except for oil and filter changes!

Cheers all, look forward to your help.

Some Z3 exhausts have a weight attached to the back box, something to do with resonance, these get loose and rattle, could possibly be you problem.

99% sure it will be a bulb, easy fix.

Common issue, the rheostat has broken in the switch, new switches are expensive and good condition second hand ones difficult to find, but worth asking our resident breakers, @Synclare & @spurs fan in a coupe, however they are easy to change.

Lighter sockets can fail for a past time, cheap easy fix.

Much appreciated Nodzed, thank you. I'm looking to the support of my Bro-in-law who's handy with motors, so I've shared this knowledge with him also. Cheers.
