Good morning to all,
from a cold day in Lincolnshire.
I have owned my Z3 convertible since 23/04/2009, and an honestly say that it has given me more pleasure than any other car that I have owned, Jaguar E type included.
The 2 litre engine has performed without fault, mileage now over 116,250 miles, it uses very little oil between oil changes. The paint was looking tired , a full re-spray t
last year has returned the car to almost a new appearance. There is one annoying condition, that being the squealing of the rear wheels caused by the rusty backplates.
I understand that there is a " short-cut " method of replacing the backplates without having to remove the wheel bearings etc. If anyone can offer advice on the short cut method I would be most obliged. Regards, ROYZ.

Hi Royy and welcome from me near Lincoln. The "shortcut" involves cutting a slot in the backplate and "threading" it over the hub. Once bolted on the slot can be welded back up. Although they are fine left as is. This can be done on BMW, Mercedes and many more.

Hi Tony,
thank you for your speedy reply.
There are many suppliers of Z3 rear wheel brake backplates, I could try pot luck, unless you can recommend one ?
I guess that cutting the slot in the correct place is very important, are you able to advise please ?
Regards,
Royz.

Hi and welcome from me in Scotland :welcome:

This is a zed i went to look at that was in Scotland for a forum member in the south coast of England.
It had the back plates changed without the bearing removed.

Hi Dave,
thank you for taking the trouble to reply, and your offer to help is much appreciated. I have owned my Z3 since 2009, the most enjoyable car that I have ever owned. Now at 116K miles it has two problems which require attention
No 1, is the well known rear brake dust covers rotting out.
No 2, is the well known air-bag warning light being on.
I have had a helping reply from Steve in Scotland with info of how to fit new dust covers without stripping the rear bearings etc
I have bought a gizmo which should have reset the air-bag warning light,,,, it didn`t work ??? Any ideas please ?
Regards,
Roy ( alias Royz )

Need to use a proper code reader to read the airbag module to see what code is keeping the light on. A Creator 310+ scanner will read it but you will need a 20pin to 16pin OBD2 cable changer to plug it in to the round diagnostic socket in the engine bay. If your car also has the 16pin obd2 socket under the steering wheel that will only read the engine and transmission modules. The 20pin pacman socket in the engine bay reads all modules. The light remaining on indicates it has a hard fault, could be bad connections under the seat, bad pretensioners or a bad airbag module, code will point you in the right direction. If its the module then you will need to find a compatible used module to replace the duff one but it will need coding to the car using software. You will need to look up the module part number on realoem parts site and look for compatible modules that are listed. Its a matter of looking on ebay or asking one of our resident breakers on here if they have what you need part number(s) wise.
Module is under central console behind the handbrake.

Hi Colb,
thanks for your reply, all a bit confusing to an old guy like me, but I will work on it.
I was born in Cardiff, and spent many hours in the baths at Newport learning to scuba dive
Moved to Anglesey in `66, then to Lincolnshire in `96, no plans to move again
I have a 16 to 20 pin OBD2 cable , connected to a cheap " Car Diagnostic Tool for BMW, B800 " .
It didn`t work , so I will look for a Creator 310 + scanner.
Regards,
Roy ( Royz )

The creator is a good bit of kit i have a c110+ that i bought before the 310+ came out still use it out on runs if someone has an issue.
I have the advantage of being in the motor trade so can also get use of our bosch stuff in work but any faults I've had the creator has read it .
Only thing seems to have an issue with ( and its not alone ) is reading the abs pumps on early models later pre face-lift and all face-lift are fine its the models with the older style abs pumps.
Stephen.

Air bag light probably going to be seat belts pre tensioner wiring its a common problem or if seat been out and ignition turned on creates airbag faults wont clear even if ok until faults in memory deleted.

Good morning Shelly,
though there is not much good about this morning. I have lived in Manby since 1996 , and never before have I seen
standing water in the orchard. If you have occasion to be up this way, give me a call, I will have a cuppa ready.
Thanks for your contact. Regards , Roy (Royz.)
