Anybody got any suggestions re getting a couple of new keys.
I only have one that 'speaks' to the car, the other is pretty much knackered but works manually.

Thought I should sort out a new one before I get trouble with the one that is currently working.

Old post on this subject here

Crux of the matter is you need a new blade cut and the key coded to the car, suggest you have a look on ebay for the key refurb services on thre that require you to post your working duff key to them, they can then cut the blade and use the transponder from the old key in the new one which would negate the need to code it to your car. You would have to sync the new key to the car for the central locking to work but that is done with a sequence of button presses on the key to sync it. Once you have synced the new key any other keys you have also require syncing immediately after completing the first one otherwise it won't work.
Other posts on the forum if you do a search for more info on key refurb/replacement and suncing the keys.
Local mobile locksmith would charge around £130 per key and may well want the EWS unit taken out of the car to code the replacement to the car using a new transponder.

I have my transponder in a bit of velcro next to the barrel, So that any dumb key will work. Of course this defeats the anti thievery a bit if you leave the velcro there all the time. I'm a shocker with keys you see..

Ta, I'll have a look on E-Bay, see whats on offer.
Bit loathe to send the only working key off in the post though, I guess a decent courier should be OK.

That's a good question, I have to admit I haven't even considered asking them as the reputation isn't great.
If anybody knows better please feel free to give me a hard time for my bias ;)

In that case I'll enquire at BMW locally. See what they say.
If they are anywhere near that I'll just get them to do it.
As a little extra info some friends Mitsubishi key went through the washing machine....£ 470 OUCH

I got a couple of these off the bay, not necessarily this seller but similar, local bloke cut them and I swapped the chip myself. There's a talent, eh?

I tried getting a key for my 2000 Z3 from dealers recently and was told can't get the master keys with remote any longer.

Not in my case.
i was informed that the separate key+alarm is no more available.
Received the newer type square key, no problems at all.

I have a '98, which only has a light in the key, no wifi...is it easy to get keys cut for this version then?

From what I understand it is “just” a key. Any generic BMW key will do the trick.
I am not an expert but I do not see why not.

Crikey started something here.....
I had no idea keys were such an issue, but the problem is if you get a 'blank' of ebay and get the blade cut, then transfer the electronics from your old key to the new one... You still only have one key !
I'm looking to have more than one, just in case of one giving up or some idiot losing it

Try this guy if you dont have the actual key code available & dont want to send it away. I dont have wifi on mine so should be fine for me.

The cheapest key you can order form BMW is the wallet one:

That will include a transponder already set for your car. If just the wallet key is not enough of a fall back, you can always buy a blank from eBay, get it cut, then move the transponder from the wallet key to the new one.
