Hey everyone. Little bit about me.... I bought my 1997 Z3 Roadster 1.9L 2 years ago when I first got to Japan (U.S. Army). I am now making preparations to import my car back to the States when I return next spring. My baby has 130,000 I'm on it, which amounts to roughly 80,000 miles. Not bad for a 22 year old car. It has a few cosmetic issues, but it runs fantastic. I'll probably be picking for some information over the coming months before she ships out of Yokohama, but hope to be a contributing member as I get comfortable with the car.

Previous cars include (not limited to) 1983 Porsche 944 Coupe, 1992 Porsche 968 Convertible, 1997 BMW 525i, 1999 BMW 535i, 2006 Jaguar X-type wagon.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome from me near Lincoln UK. Is it expensive to ship a car home from Japan, or do you get help?
I'm making a big assumption that you're in the forces ;)
Hope you enjoy it once you get it home, it'll be exotic being RHD.

Tony.

Hey there. No, it shouldn't be too bad to get it back. Apparently there was two ways to get Zeds here in Japan. Either it was bought direct from a BMW dealer, or it was imported in through an RI. According to my mechanic, oddly enough, the dealer vehicles were LHD, despite Japan being a RHD country. The RI-imported cars were RHD, so that ended up being the way most Japanese got the Z3 back then. My car even has the stickers on the sunvisors and placards in the motor bay all in Japanese... but it's a LHD.

The dealer vehicles did have to meet the rest of Japanese road safety standards, so they all have the reinforced door bar, and have U.S. DOT headlamps and windshields. It's a very strange thing. I'm finding that the only things I will have to change over is the speedo cluster and possibly the glovebox (for some reason).
