I've just read in the Daily Fail that new car sales had an all time low for a month.

It blames diesel and Brexit.

But what about the RFL change to £140?

I know several people who would have bought a new motor but are hanging onto their £20 RFL car, me included.

Surely this has caused it as well?

Probably and without getting into it, BREXIT is a great hook to hang all of lives issues on.

I also read that Hydrogen trains are being built to replace electric trains.

So what does that mean re the future of electric cars?

I must stop reading newspapers........

There was also a report on the radio that stated 80% of all new cars registered are on lease

Blimey that's an interesting stat mate. I would assume the figure being so high that will include all cars registered to rental companies like Enterprise, Greenhaus etc.

It does not matter over here if you buy a new car as road tax is based on the weight of the car and the province you live in.
For a Z3 owner over here in the Netherlands it costs €138 for three months road tax based on the weight of 1185 kg where I live.

I would imagine so mate, however I was talking to a salesman from a big chain a while ago and he said its very rare to sell a car these days, they are all lease or PCP,

Where I worked we were getting more and more Mercs, BMWs etc. in for servicing when still under manufacturers warranty or (a year old or not much more) so I would assume these would not be leased cars?

PCP was pushed hard when I was selling cars mate. All the gaffers wanted customers signed to them as it was good for repeat business so that makes a lot of sense. My brother leases his company car, has for years, says it takes the hassle out of it.

Most salesman are completely surprised when you’re looking to buy with cash. Never been into changing the car every two or three years myself. Definitely don’t want to be tied into a mileage cap either. It seems to suit many though but it it isn’t any cheaper in the long run.

I am not surprised , when we bought our X1 e84 in July 2014 we had it on pcp , because buying it that way we got another £2500 from BMW but ensured the condition for paying it off early. Turned out we had to keep the payments up for 3 month then we paid it off.
We bought the f48 used ,(2100 miles 2 month old) and paid cash for it. It was also the 4wd 20i that BMW had dropped from its range
We looked finance and while dealer was around 6% we were offered money from Santander at below 3% ,bet decided against although the 3% was tempting as it almost matched the interest cash is getting. That was looking at month payments for the loan.

When I was sales Manager at a well know car supermarket :D we pushed the guys to sell PCP plans. The repeat business was great on them which is obviously what they were designed for. They were paid more commission on them as the finance houses paid the site well above a standard finance package rates. From a personal point of view I don't like them, I'd rather have straight payments or save and buy cash.

People rarely look at the total cost of ownership of cars (or anything else) nowadays. Must be a salesman’s dream (should that me salespeople?).
