After having to reverse about 1 mile up a very narrow steep road today (oncoming lady driver was unable to reverse down hill,in fact to keep coming up she got out and passanger took over ---he was no better) I had a smell off burning clutch. I have suspected this clutch for a couple years.
Car is a 2.2 anyone know the best price options available , if it does need changing i assume clutch and flywheel

I certainly wouldn't replace a clutch without changing the flywheel, as all parts will (most likely) have covered the same about of wear and tear.
It would turn out to be a false economy, also please make sure the driven plate is fitted the correct way round as it does make a difference.;)
Pinpoint in me offering to get prices for you around Lincoln as it wouldn't be practical for you to try and get it up here if it's already been "cooked".
Hope you get it sorted for a decent cost.

Tony.

It’s the one job I’m not prepared to do. Due to access on axle stands. Others will do it. I won’t.

I need it done on my Dakar. My garage quoted me 3-4 hours labour which was £275 max. Clutch kit about £125. Plus gearbox oil.

I have to say I wouldn’t routinely replace a dual mass flywheel due to the cost. I think that’s the first time I’ve seen that recommendation for a Z3 @t-tony ?

I'm only going on the fact that where ever I've worked since the introduction of DMF that the risk of problems that leaving a well worn DMF in a vehicle can cause when fitting a complete new clutch is a "no brainer" simply due to the cost of removing/replacing the G/box and clutch assy. soon after. Because if there is a failure it will always be down to the person/company who fitted the clutch.
It's a simple case of CYA Rob. A Z3 with a DMF is no different from any other vehicle with a DMF as regards risk of failure after fitting a new clutch.

Checking again the clutch kit could probably be had for just under £100.

A LUK DMF is around £275.

And btw not doubting sensible to replace flywheel if funds permit. If the garage tells me it needs doing I’ll have to swallow it. But I’ll be leaving it to them to judge rather than do it routinely.

So if they say it will last, and doesn't what then?
This is why they get replaced "routinely", because when problems arise No one wants to be financially responsible.
Why the need for new Gear oil?

If I had bottomless pockets or was using it as a daily driver I’d consider replacing the flywheel routinely. But neither is the case.

And what if they say why have you presented us with a £275 flywheel to fit when there’s nothing wrong with yours? And it makes it through the 2,000 miles a year I’m likely to put on it over each of the next 10 years?

I rely on this. They’ll strip it out and give me a view. And I’ll trust their word. If they say it’s fine and it goes belly up in their warranty period they’ll cover the cost. If they say it’s knackered and I don’t agree to it then they won’t warrant it at all which is fair enough. I’ve got a long history with them and that’s how they do things.

Gear oil? Why wouldn’t you change it when the box is out and it’s convenient?

Took car out for few miles this morning , clutch seems to working.
Tried foot on footbrake , 4th gear and engine stalled very quickly as I was slowing letting it out, same in 3rd gear.
See how it goes , it may become a winter job, keep an eye open on parts prices for it.
Fortunatly mate has a couple of 4 posters and can borrow one , and he makes sure I dont mess it all up.

Shame you’re not South Wales. I’d have been pestering you to use the 4 poster as that’s the only reason I’m not doing mine :)

Actually its my sons mates he runs his own garage specialising on rebuilding classics
Works on his own--- but he has 2 two 4-posters and 1 scissors lifts.
he works on his own, he is a perfectionist in what he does.
Recall him giving my son a dogging for using a 12 inch adjustable for doing brake hoses on a RR,instead of the spanner [which would have been correct length to give correct torque to tighten]
I will get clutch and flywheel when I see good price and put them on the shelf until required, but may just get them done over winter.
