Need help on remote central locking

I have a facelift Z3 and managed to get the key fob to sync and work. Then it suddenly stopped working and now I can't get it to sync, I have obviously changed the batteries and tried again but without success.

I do need to get it working as I have fitted a body kit that gives no access to the door lock so I have to use the fob. I thought I was being clever by adding a cable to the door lock pull (the one at the reat at the top of the door), this is threaded through to the bonnet so in the event of the central locking failing I can still get into the car. Locked the car with the fob, pulled the cable and the door lock releases allowing me to open the door, tried it half a dozen times and it worked overtime.
Now as soon as the fob packed up the cable wouldn't release the door. I used a pump up wedge to force a gap between the wind and hood to allow a heavy metal wire to be threaded through to the door handle but it still refused to open. In the end I had to remove the soft top window and squeeze my daughter in to release the door. The door still wouldn't release until the key was placed in the ignition.
Is this normal?
And does anyone have any ideas on the key fob problem. I have checked the notorious wire breakage at the boot hinge and all is ok.
I don't want to spend a £140 on a new key only to find that it won't sync.

Thanks for the replies. I programmed the key once but now it won't reprogram, I've changed the fob battery but still doesn't work.
It had been sitting on the drive used for a couple of weeks but the battery was still fine.
Don't want to lash out on another key unless I know it will work.
I wonder if the local BMW dealer would have a spare fob they would be willing to try? If it worked I would be happy spending the £140 for a replacement.

I doubt it, would imagine it would be ordered in.

Wouldn't be needed to start the car, just the remote to the central locking which would take just a couple of minutes to programme to check to see if the central locking module on the car was working.

Bmw may do it but a locksmith may be able to sort this.
I had a local quote of 120 but thats a working key the Ewes is reprogrammed deleting missing keys.
They may be able to program up and prove a fix cheaper than Bmw.
