Hmmm well with the amount of times I have done it. You get to learn how to get to the bulbs an easier route.

One thing though that will never change is how much you need to pull on the bulbs to get them out.

Remove Radio...

Unclip the heater controls and push in one end.. turn through an angle as much as you can.. then use long nose pliers to aid the removal of the bulb through the holes the heater controls were in. Therefore as you are not through the radio aperture.. you get less scars on the fingers and knuckles.

Be careful doing it the above way as you can put a strain on the heater control cable and when you put it back together find that it doesn't blow as hot as it did before, this happened to me and I had to strip it again to adjust it

I remember that Mitsubishi Pajero/Shoguns had a similar bulb, and similar price, too. Got round it by pulling the glass part out of the holder, and re-fitting a small capless bulb, a tricky bit of fiddling about and soldering the new bulbs' wires into place, and the job was done for bu88er-all money. Not had the pleasure (yet) with the Z. And happy that way.

Finally!! After too much stress and too much cost (changed both bulbs at £10.70 each... just as well BMW didn’t supply my Christmas tree lights!!)
I finally have a fully illuminated dashboard again.

Well done @Dalek ..... I too need to get in and do mine. Did you replace with LED or the OEM bulb?

I went the OEM bulb route. They were ordered from my local BMW dealer. I did look for other, cheaper suppliers, but could not find any.
