My exhaust thinks it's one of them magicians pulling endless length of ribbon out of his sleeve. Got back home the other day with a mtr of ribbon hanging out the tail pipe. I pulled it and had maybe 5 meters of it come out. Outside of the silencer looks fine but obviously breaking down bigtime inside. (Was from ATS about 5 ot 6 yrs ago. Maybe 5000mls)

Anyway. Need a new one.

Don't want "Performance". Don't want sporty sound. In fact i'd be chuffed if it was totally silent.

Jaywalkers don't hear me coming. That would be cool.

Anyone got recommendation? ie off the shelf rather than custom. Don't want to spend more on the exhaust than the car is worth.

Thanks guys.

My custom one was abut £350 (cat back) from pro speed in abercarn, too loud for your liking but just say ...no noise and Im sure he will sort. I choose mid sport sound (think its louder) and I love it

Sounds very reasonable? Was that stainless? How long ago was that (just wondering what inflation has done to your £350)

I had this same dilemma before Christmas. If you look on eBay you can get some OEM ones for less than £100 (if it’s the 1.9?)

I ended up buying some pre bent stainless and a nice back box and resonator and welded them up myself. Cost me about £150 all in.

Acoustics are quite important on a 4 cyl as they can drone really badly.
Lynne's m44 auto was horrendous at anything above 40 mph when we first got wasn't long in removing abd managed to find a great condition oe rear section

I hate stainless exhausts with a passion. They just never sound right. The best exhaust is from BMW made by Boysen, Eberspaecher or Zeuna Staerker - but they are lots of money. About 800 quid for a Z3 rear section.
However, that £800 exhaust will be quiet, perform well and last 15 or 20 years. My 1994 318Ti is running a 10/94 dated BMW exhaust and the rear section I recently removed from a 2002 Z3 2.2 (sorry, it won't fit a 1.9) is the original....and is in perfect condition. They weigh twice as much as rubbish from Bosal, Walker etc because they use stainless steel with an alloy outer skin plus thicker tubes and proper baffles. The only aftermarket exhaust that is (almost) worth a carrot is Klarius, better than the usual sh*** but still not a patch on the real thing.

In 2007 I needed to replace the rusty original rear boxes on my 18 year old 7 Series. I tried two Bosals (both faulty), gave up and paid £600 for a BMW system that is on there still. The difference in sound, performance and economy was remarkable.

Thanks Bombur. I spoke to him yesterday. Quoted me £430. But he said it wouldn't be quiet because they're basically all straight through/through flow boxes so would always be a bit on the sporty side.

Thanks Andyboy. When I lived in Germany Eberspaecher was always my goto exhaust. It's what most exhaust centres had on the shelf. Although I did try Abarth and Bosal. The 4 pipe Bosal looked cool on my Matra but joints had to be welded back up every 1000k's or so. Having said that. On the Matra everything on the car broke every 1000k's or so anyway.

So, anyway, haven't made up my mind about the exhaust. But I think I'm leaning more towards OEM rather than custom. Kinda scared of the dual carriageway drone.

Hey, @Andyboy, Ringing round my local motor factors the only one I can get is Klarius. Well, there's a cheaper one called 'Premium' (She said it's Euroflo?? Whoever they are) But that's it.

You said that Klarius is (almost) worth a carrot? I've never heard of them. At way below half the price of the genuine OE part is Klarius worth a try?

Thanks :)

They’re okay. It won’t last 10 years but I’ve used them and they are not bad at all.

That’s Klarius btw.

Euroflow sounds like landfill.

Now here's a silly question. Sorry. I'd need to nip into town to collect it. It's a bit to long so might not fit in my GLA with seats down. Also a weird shape to strap to me roof rack so I was thinking of strapping a ladder to me roof rack and laying the exhaust on the ladder? Would that work?

You speaking from experience there I guess. It's been a while since I looked under the car so can't picture how long it is.

Thank you - saved me the bother of clipping on the roof rack :)

Anyway. As I said. Only one I can get locally is Klarius. (ignoring the ones that are sub £100 which don't fill me with confidence).

So. My usual GoTo motor factor wanted £350 for the klarius. Next one I tried wanted £300. Then online EuroCarParts have it online for £275 with free uk wide delivery. But trying to order it and they couldn't deliver to my PostCode. (strange).

So I rang nearest EuroCarParts, I didn't mention the site. Just asked for a price for the klarius. £183.31 plus VAT. Well. That's not bad I thought. She said she'd get one in for me and I could pop down. So. Anyway. At that price I couldn't say no.

Later that night though I was worried in case she'd been looking at the wrong bit and we'd just end up looking at a tail pipe or a bag of fuses or soemthing.

But no. Went down to newport today. I'm dead pleased. Really well made. And has the oval chrome tail pipe already on. I was thinking I'd have to buy that extra like last time.

Lovely job - please do post a pic and a report.

The Klarius system I used on an E36 Compact was decent.

ECP are a funny bunch but I like them. I was collecting something or other at a local branch and I mentioned the dead stock clearout 7 Series E32 dampers (shock absorbers) they had on for 12 quid each. Computer at home says no more stock. ECP branch computer says there are a pair left in the Wembley warehouse. They were 12 quid alright....for both. Do I want them?

Yes. 😂 They will sit on the shelf along with the other pair.

That and a new E36 front wing for eight quid.
