I have seen comment regarding the M52 engine being prone to tappet ticking noise and came across this on YouTube just now.

Interesting choice of sound track. Never get the whole N word thing and why some people can use it and others can’t. I switched off at that point not because of the music itself but this bloke using it to big himself. I would imagine his ‘newly found’ tip that takes 10 mins to explain is running the engine at 3k RPM for a couple of minutes.

Your right, just ran my startup procedure after winter hibernation (which includes turning the engine over until the oil pressure light goes out before firing up) and I got and tapping noise from the drivers side of the engine which sounded louder from under the car! This was at first alarming she’s never done it before but ran her for a while and as you said rev’d at 3k rpm and it went hopefully not to return?

yeah something to look out for with this engine. Poor oil changes etc. Once that journal is gone it’s a head change. Tappet noise is just the hydraulic lifters getting air into the oil. Either this process which is recommended by BMW or a long drive getting the engine up to temp sorts it.
Also more prone on this early N52. Later had the black cover. Some slight differences between the two.

This process was recommended and used by BMW as per SI B11 09 07 but was revised.
This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B11 09 07 dated January 2009.
SUBJECT
Intermittent Hydraulic Valve Adjuster (HVA) Noise
MODEL
All E82, E83, E88, E85, E86, E60, E61, E70, E90, E91, E92 and E93 vehicles with N51, N52 or N52K engines produced approximately up to November 31st 2008; refer to cylinder head casting identification attachment.
SITUATION
An occasional ticking or rattling noise from the camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) may occur during cold engine starts, due to frequent short-distance driving, or the noise may occur for an extended period of time even though the engine is at operating temperature.
Improved parts were phased into production beginning on 10/1/2008 and fully implemented on November 31st 2008.
CORRECTION
Do not perform the bleeding procedure that was previously provided in SI B11 09 07 which has now been deleted.
All vehicles produced between 10/1/2008 and 11/31/2008 must have each vehicle's cylinder head casting number identified before hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) replacement, due to staggered implementation. Refer to the attachment for the casting number location. Vehicles produced after 11/31/2008 have already been fitted with improved parts. Vehicles produced prior to 10/1/2008 will require the new parts.

A cylinder head casting number that does not match will require replacement of the 12 exhaust camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) as per Repair Instruction RA 11 33 050, Removing and installing/replacing all rocker arms. Only the exhaust camshaft and rocker arms have to be removed in order to replace the hydraulic valve lifters. Do not remove or replace any intake camshaft valve train components.

I had this the other week and all i needed to do was let it warm up on idle for around 15 minutes and then did the same the weekend after and now gone. Just in time to take it to the peaks on Sunday. That is after i have washed it on Saturday

Same here, a run sorts it out on the e89, mine starts to do it when its getting close to an oil change so I am guessing that oil degragation doesn't help?
I would say that if we took note all engines are quieter after an oil and filter change. New oil does make a difference.
