my INSTRUMENT CLUSTER Need to be replace



Z3 1997 1.9 MANUAL



My part number is: BMW 62.11-8 371 582 (COUNTER IS ON km/h) – total 99,000 KM, not miles



Questions:

1. Total distance counter - Where is the storage of the total distance counter ? ECU or instrument cluster itself ? what will if I change the unit to a new one?
2. Part number - I saw on ebay some instrument cluster for sale
   1. All of them was on miles - can I change it to KM?
   2. Iif that the part number are not the same, I saw:

• 62.11-8 401 754
• 62.11-6 900 520
• Ect…..

So the unit look the same but the prat of the number not – it will fit?

1. Should I buy only unit that came from the manual version ? or it doesn’t metter even from Automatic version ?

Please, need some help here….

I'm just a little curious as to why you need to replace the instrument cluster. Has it failed, or is it because it is reading in km?
If it has failed, is it showing a code? EEP_002???

I bought the car only three days ago,
No I don’t want to low my km and looking to keep it on km.

the problem is with the digital display, please see photo.



I saw some youtubes videos that talk about the need to remold the legs of the display unit.. but I don’t know if to try it or just replace it.



As you can see in the photo – the first line lights very very low

The second – have nothing on display

And for the third – I don’t know what it supposed to be, but its look wrong.



If the reading are store in the ECU I can just replace it.



What do you think should I need to do ?

Ok, it’s not as bad as you think.
The bottom row is showing when the car needs a service. As each block switches off, it gets closer to the need for an engine service. If you have the manual, have a read and it’ll explain it better there.
The display being dimmer can be repaired by sending it to an electronics specialist. In the UK I’d recommend using Autotronics, but you may have another specialit where you are. Check out goggle. It looks as if it is simply dimmer, so not a catastrophic fault.

Looks like the backlighting of your odometer and trip meter has failed. Not sure how it works, but I would suggest that your more important problem is why your check engine and traction control warning lights are on.
Picture shows what can be displayed, from the handbook.

Take the binnacle out and replace the back-light illumination bulbs (there are 5 IIRC, 3w 601 style bulbs which are removable fron their holders.

If the digital mileometer and odometer are dull it will probably be the bulb behind them. I had this and it was a fairly simple fix. Before and after

Zed models are different so you may find yours is not exactly as the photo you posted and you'll only find that out once you've removed the binnacle (a rubber suction cap is useful to pull it out after you've removed the screws). The Odometer and Service lamps are likely to be 12v 1.5w have a fixed beige base. If so, Osram 2452 mfx6 bulbs or equivalent should do you - Autodoc sell for approx. £2 each.
While you've got the binnacle out it's likely worth changing the dash backlight bulbs as well - there are three of those and are wedge type that fit into removable green bases. These are 12v 3w W3W and Osram 2821 bulbs or similar should be okay - Autodoc sell for approx. £1 each.
If any of the telltale warning light bulbs have gone, then Osram 2351 mfx6 will do. These are 12v 1,2w and have a fixed black base. Approx £1.50 each from Autodoc.
Just be cautious about buying anything until you've had a look first though.
I'm hoping I'm right on this, because I'm planning on doing the same myself later this year. I'm sure someone who's already done it will be along to correct me if I'm wrong. Good luck!

The speedometer is in MPH. Why is the odometer (total distance) in KM?
