Interesting read, I have always liked the SLK but not enough to want to buy one. The article seems to sum up what has always been my impression, the SLK is good but doesn't have the sparkle of the Z.

Or the looks. And what age was the writer? The hassle I remember from the 70s messing with pop-studs and twisty clip things on convertibles from back then, and this tw@'s complaining about having to pull two handles, all done from inside the car. Obviously never had to get out of an Austin-Healey, wrestle the roof up, and then do up all the fasteners. Young people today...........

Well having a Z3 and an e89 I can tell you which roof option I prefer. But its more down to lazyness than anything else ;);)

I used to love the roof on my original Mk 1 Spitfire. Poeple used to complain about the hastle of putting it up but it only took me 90 seconds and when stowed it took none of the available luggage space. The hood itself folded up and stowed behind a trim panel behind the seats and the frame was slid along the inside of the rear wings. On the Z the hood takes all the space behind the seats (where I would put the 3rd passenger in the Spit), and as the for that folding tin top! :)

The folding tin top is great, but it has disadvantages to. The Z3 roof is much quicker to drop and lift though.;)

Before I bought my Z3 I was very close to buying an SLK until someone at work said “ Have you thought about a Z3?”. I hadn’t, till then, and the rest as they say is history. The folding tin tops are great especially in the security they offer and as long as you don’t have any problems they’re fine. A bit old fashioned outlook maybe but I think a sports car ought to be a rag top all the same.

Tony.

One thing always bothered me with the SLK, with the roof down it just looks like they cut the roof off one of their saloons rather than designed a roadster. Looks like it should be up against a 3 series convertible rather than a sports car.

Problems! Pah! Don't talk to me about problems. :(

Booked in tomorrow to be 'investigated' and the errant pin recovered and re-installed. Or, is it, then the arguments start

When they were first out, the Z3’s looks were dismissed as fluffy pastiche, whereas the SLK was regarded as sleek and modern

The Z3 has aged beautifully though and continues to, whereas the SLK looks very dated now, IMO

it was the 2.2 sport I test drove, but I picked an slk instead because of the bigger boot, so i could cart someones golf clubs around the UK for him.

The SLK was boring, expensive to run and the dealership experience was terrible.

I was glad to get back in a BMW, even though that was an e46 3 series.

Anyway don't moan at me, you won a brand new Z3 with that hole in one in the BMW Championship, and didnt take it for me.

There really is no contest, the Z3M is head and shoulders more desirable than the Merc or Porsche and that’s reflected in the sale prices.

Not driven the SLK but a mate had one years ago. Nice enough car but the bug eyed headlights spoil the front view for me. More recent versions are much nicer.

Now that's a tough one. I worked for Merc in 2008 and drove some fantastic cars including an SLK55AMG. The thing was an absolute bullet, gizmos galore etc. I love the heritage of Merc aswell as I learnt alot about its history whilst working for them. My problem is a love their old stuff but not so enamored on the new.
So Merc or BMW on these particular two models? Zed all day.

After my divorce I got the Z3 and then found out my ex had picked up an SLK. Shows why we are divorced.
