Hey y'all... constant lurker, been learning A LOT each time I work on my project '98 2.8 -- this will be my first dive into the engine, and it's a bit intimidating.

Not currently living where the Zed is stored, but trying to get a game plan together to tackle when I can work on her around the holidays. Had bought with multiple codes, cleared them, and the following keep popping up:

P1188 - Fuel Control Bank 1 Sensor 1
P0170 - Fuel Trim (Bank 1)
P0325 - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit (Bank 1)
P0330 - Knock Sensor 2 Circuit (Bank 2)
8 - Air Mass Flow Meter
57 - Knock Sensor 1
59 - Knock Sensor 2
202 - Fuel Trim Limit Bank 1
227 - Fuel Trim Bank 1
233 - Catalyst Efficiency Bank 1

As far as I can tell from my research, for this many and these types of codes to pop at the same time along both banks, it's probably an air leak somewhere? Is the P1188 likely the actual cause and all other codes are symptoms? If so, what is the best way to DIY diagnosing an air leak and where does this problem tend to present itself on the M52? If it's not an air leak, thoughts?

Apologies if this is covered in another thread... I probably just didn't search with the right keywords.

I would try clearing the fault codes, then disconnected the MAF (which will put it into limp mode) . Then run the motor and see which codes return.

Gonna need to do that over the phone with my wife in the next week or so. What might that indicate when disconnecting the MAF sensor? I have a rudimentary understanding of engines, and I'm trying to grasp it a little bit at a time.

It would suggest that the MAF is no good and causing the other issues.

Think I had the opposite of your codes, no MAF code but I got two codes telling me it was running lean on bank 1 and bank 2 , suggesting that as it was lean extra air was entering the manifold after the MAF sensor . Found a perished pipe and and a couple of split rubber plugs which live under the inlet manifold . An experienced guy at the local garage where went for the replacement breather pipe showed me them . So looks like not enough air in your case or being measured incorrectly maybe?

Okay, cleared codes and the two that popped back up were:

P0325 - Knock Sensor 1 Circuit (Bank 1)
P0330 - Knock Sensor 2 Circuit (Bank 2)

And after clearing again and disconnecting the MAF, those were the only two again (besides the code that says the MAF isn't connected).

Your codes that popped actually indicated lean on banks 1/2? I've been reading A LOT of places that common issue with the intake boots is that they're prone to cracking.
