I've recently purchased some brake calipers and vented discs from @gookah at ZedFest. The calipers and discs are removed from a 2.8 and from what I've read its a good upgrade to the stock brakes on a 1.9

The plan is to repaint these (although they do look brand spanking new), I'd like to have them a light blue possibly. But I'd be interested to know what others would suggest in terms of colour. Silver or black is a bit too plain for me and ideally I'd like some colour.

So first question is, what paint should I use - any particular brand that anyone recommends? Ideally it would be from an aerosol as that's a lot more fun than painting with a brush!

As I'll only be doing the job once, I may as well get a good set of discs. The ones that I got from Pete with the calipers are in good shape but I do like the look of drilled and grooved or dimpled and grooved discs.

Will something like this work for me?

From these two which is better in terms of pure performance? I personally prefer the look of the drilled discs but are there any disadvantages to the drilled discs compared to the dimpled ones?

I'll also be getting a good old decal to put onto the caliper and I've seen quite a few with the letter "M" on it, the decals do look lovely and I think it finishes the caliper off nicely but I won't stop hearing about it from the M Police =))

For pads I'll be going with the Red Stuff as I've heard great things about them but again I'm open to suggestions. Reason I chose Red Stuff is because of the reduced brake dust.

Also I'll be tackling the fronts first and will probably move on to the rear after a month or so, having a different setup (different pads and discs) at the front won't affect braking overall will it?

I'll be tackling the job in a couple of weeks once I have all the bits ready, I'll do my best to document it should anyone else want to upgrade the brakes on their 1.9.

Thanks.

If you want to use an aerosol can Faheem you will have to either a) mask the braking area of the disc, or b) leave over spray and get rid with some heavy braking. I had yellow callipers on my Oxford Green Z3 and liked them.

Just use your imagination mate.

@t-tony calipers or discs aren't on the car yet so I'll be able to paint these before they go on the car. That's the only way I feel I could do a proper, clean job.

@Sean d Did you notice any sort of noticeable difference with your discs?

Yep, I got that mate, but still, using an aerosol can you will get overspray onto the braking surface unless you mask them out. When I fitted Ant's new discs a few weeks ago they were completely coated and these had to "burned" off by heavy braking over about 12 miles.
The drilled and grooved discs dispel water through the grooves and cool better through the drillings (more effective then dimples IMHO) Mine are M-Tec discs.

It's getting a little late Tony and my brain probably is functioning as efficiently, but I've read that back 5 times and I'm still not getting it :( Sorry.

"overspray onto the braking surface"

How do you mean? I'll mask the piston and the area around it as well as removing the rubbers for the guide pin and Masking the bleed screw as well. If the discs aren't near the calipers (off the car) how will the overspray get onto the discs? I'm obviously just not reading or understanding what you've said properly. :banghead::bored:

Good news about drilled discs though as they're the ones I originally wanted.

I thought you were talking about painting the disc "hubs" as well as the callipers mate. Sorry if I got that wrong, if you don't paint them the discs soon look scabby and spoil the effect. I always put some plastic plugs into the hole for the hose on the callipers. If you want some and your coming over I will give you some mate. If you can't make it I will post you some.:)

I upgraded my stock 1.9 calipers to 3.0 calipers (on the front) and installed the Mtec Discs with EBC pads (front and back). The difference is light and day. One of the best mods I have done.

As your calipers are already off, they will be easy to mask up and spray.

If you want a hand fitting them let me know, more than happy to help out.

If your going Mtec mate i advise you pay and have them coat the discs for you they only do black or gold but mine are done and it gives a good finish and saves you having to touch them.
its only an additional £15 if i remember cheaper ghan the hassle in my opinion.

I spent ages painting my new rear calipers but when I bled the brakes, a little fluid got on the caliper and took it straight back to bare metal!

Have had MTEC disks and Yellowstuff pads on for quite a while now, and had no issues with stopping at any stage. The MTEC coating is a good idea, and so far looks reasonable underneath still. Although I have thick spoked wheels and haven't taken them off for a while to actually put eyes on them!

I (being careful with the £££) bought the bare metal M-Tec discs and applied this paint to the "hub" parts of the disc and I'm very pleased with the finish.

Only 2 coats, hardly used much at all and it covers very well.

Tony.

ps. I used EBC Ultimax pads which are black, but .......................

And they work very, very well.

Hmm....decisions decisions.

@t-tony What paint did you use in the pads? Just VHT paint? I'd be tempted to paint my Redstuff pads a deep purple. =)) I'll probably go for coated discs as I won't have the patience to paint the hubs, but that does look fab. Good work

In all honesty I've never had any issues with braking and I renewed all my pads last year as well as all the brake hoses. The zed is the second fastest car I've ever driven so I don't really know what good or bad brakes are. This is just a fun way to make my back pocket feel a little lighter again. ;) And the discs do look really nice.

Edit: I'd love a nice bit of estoril blue on the calipers but how do I find heat resistant estoril blue paint? I'll have to go to a paint mixers tomorrow.

Mate, unless your going to track your car heat resistant paint isn't really that important. Just search Brake calliper paint on eBay. You'll be amazed at what you can find. The paint I used on the pads is not anything special, I bought it at our local Andrew Page outlet.

Look very nice too Pete against those sparkly wheels :thumbsup:When I did my Z3 callipers I used 2 colours, Yellow for the calliper and "Chrome" for the carriers.

Cheers Pete, looks brill in that colour.

Last question, I promise.... should you use clear on top to 'seal' everything in. Read different things online so not sure what to follow.

When I put my decals on Faheem, I did give them a couple of coats of clear liqueur. They do get to stinking hot if I get a good run home from work and still look good. :)

Tony.

ps. Haven't had the ultimate test, .......... yet !. Sean?

I've upgraded to 300mm MTEC drilled and grooved discs along with EBC pads (same setup as @t-tony) and I've been impressed with them so far. I get a little bit of dust on the fronts but nothing a quick wash doesn't sort out.

Even going from 1.9 to 2.8 brakes upfront you should see a big improvement and fitting MTEC discs will be more beneficial. I haven't seen anyone yet that doesn't regret fitting the discs.
