....... is the scarlet pimpernel! Rang a few times, sent 2 email on his website page and 2 messages on his FB page Accepted he's flat out but this is poor! Any other means of contacting him please? Failing that can anyone recommend a VANOS specialist up North ish please?

Is yours single or twin?
Ive read from a Z3 specialist on bimmerforums that the single vanos does not suffer the same issues as twin.
The single vanos valve timing is on/off.
You can check via some software if it works. If you have no kick around 3,5k then it may be knackered by apparently the single is not usually afflicted.

The twin is constantly varying hence the effects are noticeable when it wears the seals which is well under 100k miles I believe.

I heard if you DO get a kick above 3.5k then the seals need replacing.

Cheers. Mine is the single VANOS and takes off like a rocket post 3500 rpm. Heard both stories as both you and @Mnbrennan state. She's also got a bit of a hic-up on idle which is apparently another sign. Just going from A-Z to get her the best she can be really.

To be honest the seals should be a DIY. I'd only get Mr Vanos in if the whole unit needs replacing

So if I got the seals (circa £30 a set) a good indie would be able to do it a doddle?

Thanks Martin. No other gaskets etc required, just the seals I take it?

Yeah do it yourself, I bought the kit for £35 that locks the engine timing. Took me a couple of hours.

Erm think mine is ready. It Just doesn't seem to have the same kick it did when i bought it.
