The test is up this month on the wife's Z3M so with the roads being dry and free of salt I thought I would wake it from hibernation and check it over ready for test. It's been on a trickle charger all winter and I run it up to temp every now and again so she started first time. Everything worked ok, no brakes binding, oil pressure good so blood pressure stayed good too. All it needed was a test drive to get the gearbox oil up to temp and check again for leaks around the engine and transmission. Nice and steady for the first 4 or 5 miles to get her fully up to temp and then.....................f""k me I had forgotten how fast and dangerous this thing can be. Exiting a roundabout in 2nd and got a bit over confident (read clumsy) with the throttle and the back end snapped out like lightning. A few miles further on and she did the same thing again in 3rd gear in a straight line, not so far out but enough to get the heart racing. Roll on the Summer months and more top down fun.
Test tomorrow at 14.00.

FAILED.
O/S/R tyre cracked on the inside sidewall with cords visible. Plenty of tread left on but potentially lethal. I took it straight to my trusted tyre fitter who scared me even more because according to the date code the rear tyres were made in 2000 and coming up for 18 years old! The fronts are only 4 years old so still ok to keep on but I have ordered a pair of Uniroyal rain tyres to be fitted tomorrow afternoon then the retest and she's good to go.
I guess this is a problem with cars that only do a small annual mileage and something to check out when buying one.

Here's what's going on across the back. Uniroyal rain tyres giving 25% better grip in wet weather apparently. I thought they would be just what this car needs.

The best tyre man for miles around. Fair prices and treats your wheels with the care they deserve. I have known him and used his services on cars and trucks for over 30 years.

His current wingman is a chip off the old block. Checking the fronts and setting the pressure without being asked.

Fitted and ready to go. Sitting high because she's not settled back down on the springs after being jacked up.

Thanks David. It is great and drives like a brand new one. Straight from the tyre shop for the retest and she has another 12 months ticket.

That's why cars over 40 years old should still have an MOT or at least some form of compulsory annual safety check
