My car goes for its MOT on Friday at 10:45 am - one wheel bearing replaced - new Hankooks all round - checked all lights, horn and underneath - and it will get a wash and a polish tomorrow evening. Here's hoping all goes well - I have chosen an MOT centre 30 miles away so that the car is well settled for the emissions test on arrival - might as well make a day of it in the Zed!:nailbiting:

Good luck...could all do with a comprehensive MOT check list, to avoid any "silly" failures...MOTs are the cause of some anxiety now our Z3s are maturing...calling all resident MOT testers. @Stevo7682 ;)

Good luck for the test on Friday, it sounds like you have done everything you can to keep it in tip top condition, so I'm sure it will pass with flying colours..

My car had its MOT yesterday and passed without any issues, I think this is down to the fact that it did 322 miles last year and nothing to do with my limited mechanical skills!!

The silly stuff we should all know to check lights, tyres, wipers, washers etc.

The majority of serious failures come from deteriorated brakes, corroded brake pipes, front wishbone play/wear, play in steering, corroded fuel tank straps, exhaust leak/emissions and deteriorated/weeping shocks. You see the same things every time on Z3 MOT histories.

So unless you want to put the car up on axle stands and be prepared to test things like wishbone ball joints then it's not straightforward to check everything yourself. And even then you have to know what is too much play, too much corrosion and that's subjective between testers anyway.

I have a good idea of what I'm looking for but ultimately I'm happy enough to stick it in for an MOT and see what comes back.

Retests are free so you're effectively paying someone else to do the diagnosis for you.

But lights, tyres etc we should all be checking regularly anyway and not just before an MOT :)

I use an independent MOT testing station for all my cars. I know them, they know me and they have always been reasonable with any apparent issues. I like to do this independently as there is no pressure on them to replace parts, get other work etc. I do always present the car clean and tidy and check the obvious for failed bulbs, washer/wiper issues, tyre wear etc (this should be done routinely anyway). As my cars are regularly serviced by a trusted independent BMW garage (or fixed myself if within my limited mechanical capability), I have yet to have a failure (apart from a nail in a tyre once). Any advisories always get remedied at the earliest opportunity. In my opinion, this approach, whilst perhaps not the cheapest short term approach, leads to reliability and safety, especially necessary for an older vehicle. Sorry, end of sermon!:)

Good luck with the test. My own one is next week. Just replacing the radiator and the bolt holding the oil cooler has fractured in the cooler. I will need to bodge a running repair to get it running again.

Been meaning to get round to it for ages but one thing and another.
I will get on with it and finish the thread as i went to the effort of taking all the pictures for it and edited them.

Thanks Stevo, I didn't mean to pressure you, just remembered it was talked about on a previous MOT thread. I agree with @mrscalex that the worn out stuff tends to be the usual suspects but a z related checklist could help some people to check off the basics and feel slightly better come MOT day.

Good news - the Zed flew through the MOT - 5th consecutive year it hasn't let me down since I purchased the car and brought it up to spec.:) I was hoping to take a photo of the car up on the rocking horse ramps but too many staff about - damn!:banghead:.
