MOT Fail

Knew it was going to happen. The MOT place I usually go to has closed down so had to try another = Fail

This could be end of the road for the Zed as I always said once it needs a bit of expensive work its going.

Any ideas on potential costs of the below

He said he poked a hole through the sill and the rust is near the jacking points. I did query this but he was having none of it. Rust 30cm from wheel and its a fail. I was miffed and couldn't be arsed to really scrutinise.

I suspect there is a horror story behind the outer sills, but I hope there isn't.

No need to scrap - the inner sill is really beefy thick steel. If there are any holes it’s easy to weld a patch.
By the way the outer sills are cosmetic only and not relied on for structural strength. You can take them off and drive it. ( And if they’re not on the car there’s nothing for the MOT man to fail) I’m sure t-Tony or Stevo can provide more ‘official ’ thoughts about this.

And anyway, you’ve got to keep your Zed, to carry on attracting exotic cars to park outside your house!!

The guy did say it was a surprise as brake lines and everything underneath all looked really clean, said it was lovely.....maybe he wanted to deflect from how my face was portraying

Currently my car needs horn replaced - instrument cluster bulb replacements - and possibly jack point strengthening - it’s all money - but worth it for the driving experience! Go for it!

Suggested Paul to take the outer covers off to see what condition the inners are, will pop down to see what state they are in when he gets them off.

Many testers don't know about sill covers. I would remove them and see how bad they are/aren't. A tester does not have to make a hole in a panel to say something is corroded to excess. They should use finger and thumb pressure along with the corrosion assessment tool. If you feel it has been tested unfairly complain to the local MOT office. You can get their contact details from the testing station.

IIRC that ain't true, it's rust 30cms from suspension mounts etc. Sounds like time to take the covers off and find out the truth, rather than just guessing about what's behind there.

If it is the front of the covers or the jacking points, I think they are around 30cms of the "lollipop" mounting.

Regardless, I would be inspecting before complaining. I'd rather be warned about corrosion I wasn't aware of.

I was referring more to the "rust 30cms from wheel" bit, I don't remember that from the book, and the VI tend to be a bit pedantic about wording. Still, NMFP anymore.

What they're looking for is "excessive corrosion" within 30cm of brake, steering, suspension, or seat belt mountings plus structural areas.

Having slept on it, I'm more pragmatic and too be honest had my head in sand with both issues. I've felt steering when reversing out my drive and over the kerb lip poppy, also when I had exhaust done the guy did some filling and spraying by the sills and said that should give you an extra year or so.
However I still can't fork out loads on what is a 2k car at best, but less realisticly

A quick bit of ebaying gets you a fresh front end that should last a while

The tricky part is the rusty bits, and that'll need the covers off to be sure what's wrong. Depends on whether you want a Z3 with new bits, or you'd rather buy something to replace it which may well come with its own new set of problems.

I have a slush fund of £550 (which my wife seems now to have forgotten about) as picked up a hard top for free, then had difficulty storing it, so it got sold.
I will need sills and painted, then front end stuff. That's if inner sills don't require much work
