Took it in this morning and it failed with 4 Off, Repair Immediately Major Defects.

Front side lamp not working.
Registration Plate lamp inoperative in the case of a single lamp or all lamps
Headlight aim too high Nearside
Headlight aim too high Offside

Bought 3 lamps to replace these

And the MOT guy realigned the headlights anyway!!!!!!
That is a bit annoying as I had the headlights aligned after I put the front end back together. Obviously didn’t do it right.!!!!

Bulbs swapped over and all working, but got to wait until 2.30 now to take it back for the retest !!!

Just one thing ......MAJOR DEFECT........really?

Other advises...to Monitor
Front brake hoses. Offside rear brake pipe, and oil leak ( not excessive)

Not a bad result then

Check lights and handbrake before an MOT, pretty basic stuff TBF Mazza ;)

Pretty good result really. Bit of a pain though having to wait all day for your retest tho.

My zed failed on left hand side, side lights not working which was a blown fuse. He tried new bulbs in the rear but didn't check the fuse. Changed the fuse when I got home and took it back for the free retest.
Have an advisory about "splits appearing in drive belt" and "corrosion on offside outer sill cover"

Why advise someone about something which isn't even a testable item though?

Tony.

If a blown number plate bulb is a major defect what would they class as play in a track rod end ball joint be? - super major defect - PG9 job!!

I know what you are saying about the defect wording before it would have been a fail but now all fails are major ( unless it's a dangerous ) .
When you fail a car and go back on mot computer to record the results ALL fails ( major and dangerous) and minors are pre written you tick appropriate box text is already there ( you cannot fail a car on anything that is not set up this way ) the only manual things you can type in are manual advisories .
So yes while some of these things may seem petty but you have to draw a line in the sand somewhere then stand by that.
And the rules are the rules a defective bulb or wiper could still be a hazard granted not to the extent of a seriously worn brake or suspension components .
Its people like me that take the flack from that the worst ones are always the ones who know they have things that are a fail .
Classic for this is people who illegally space number plates
Now they know they are not legal as they have had to buy show plates as no proper outlet will legally sell you them .
Now the obvious thing to do to save grief would be have a set of legal ones ( for mot ) but generally no they would rather stand and try argue the case by saying that they passed before etc .
But the thing they dont consider is while illegal plates fitted is £100 fine if a tester passes them and dvsa walk in at end of test tester could end up in hot water.
Sane goes for turning a blind eye to anything If Dvsa walk in at end of test they could put it back on ramp and retest it .
Just realised that this has turned into a bit of a rant so sorry for that :oops:.

But you're absolutely correct Steve. Vanity number plates (and this is exactly what they are) is a pet hate of mine, along with not displaying a front plate which could very easily be sorted by not having to have them but then all speed cameras would have to nab you from the rear.

Guilty of that one I'm afraid :bag:

For the look, simple as that really :D

The Golf I tried a couple of legal fonts and also a black and silver but none of them looked right, whereas the American style one looks at home in my opinion

The Z3 very very rarely has no plate, but will occasionally take it off for convoys to shows or similar

Every time I take my cars for an mot, I go through the obvious checks. If they find something like a bulb gone, I just get the feeling that they will run through the rest of the car ragged!

You may just find the tester thinking to their self "if they can't be arsed to check the simple stuff they won't likely be arsed to have the serious stuff checked either", so I will have to".

Yes I get that. I always say that cars over here in Florida look so much nicer without front plates for sure.
At a garage I used to work st th ere was a young smart arse who had a Rover 420 with "Itallic" styled letters on the number plates. When got pulled he ask why he had been stopped and was told that his plates were illegible. When asked which letters, the young PC said "The K and the T. To which SA said, "well you can obviously read them then?"
One other point is if you leave the front plate off, leave it at home and don't prop it undamaged on the dash board ready to say it fell off and I retrieved it;)
