Took a 2008 Vauxhall Corsa for it's MOT this morning - it passed but I got one advisory that just said 'worn tyres'. Two of the tyres are brand new and the other two are getting ready but both have at least 3.5 mm left on them and certainly don't look like they need replacing yet, or else I would have replaced them before the test.
Any tyre, once fitted, and having travelled several miles could be classed as 'worn' - don't get it really - if he had put worn and in need of replacement I could understand it but then it should have been a fail. A tyre is either legal or illegal.
It's a car I intend selling and now any prospective buyer will look at the MOT and want the two tyres replacing before buying - so this flipant remark is going to cost me around 100 quid

And there in lies the problem, he maybe wanted you to spend your £100 with him. Just tell any customer you have priced the car considering it will soon need a couple of tyres.

If there's nothing wrong with the tyres just tell any possible new owners that you have fitted almost new part worn tyres as a precaution

Thank you Tony for your reply - they do sell tyres - but I take up to 20 cars a year to the same garage for an MOT and have used them for nearly 40 years - never have any problem with them looking for work because they know if they do find anything I will take the car away and do the repairs myself. Have a very good understanding with them and they are always thorough and fair. I don't expect any favours , don't ask for any and don't get any, which suits me but they are usually fair and use a bit of common sense.
Today for example one of the lads had not turned up so I had to sit in the car and do the necessary while the examiner carried out the test.
Was just a bit thrown by this advisory.

I am a big believer in re cycling stuff - but wouldn't consider putting part worn tyres on a pair of roller skates yet alone a car. Who knows the history of any used tyre - false economy and probably dangerous.

Just been in conversation with another guy on another forum - his MOT examiner checks all his tyres with a depth gauge and puts the readings as an advisory each year - I've looked at the MOT history of his car and it's correct - the readings were 5mm and 6mm of tread on his tyres at the last test. I understood that the idea of an advisory was to make the presenter aware that an item was on the way out and may need attention in the near future or at least before the next test - or am I missing something?

No, you are quite right, as company policy we have to note the tyre size (need to make sure they are the same size on an axle as part of the test) and the tread depth of each tyre. ( imperitve, in case the car requires a tyre and it saves the lazy buggers in the office having to go look for themselves). The MOT only has to find the vehicle fit to pass the test AT the time of the test, not even tomorrow. The advisory system is not a "Get out of jail free card" for the tester, it merely shows he/she had their eyes open during the test.
