MOT advice

A little question.
I bought a sad Zed last year. Its now almost ready for mot. The rear screen is shocking though. A picture would turn a zed owners stomach!
Holes gaffer tape inside and outside its also opaque with age so I guess it would fail mot.

Before I invest any more dosh I need to gauge if its worth a hood or rear window. So I thought an mot test would give me some answers on the condition of the whole car.
Now my question is does the rear window need to be in place for the test, I could remove it, or at least whats left of it. I have a hood cover for protection while its off the road.

Put it in for a test with whats left of the rear window in place, don't think it will be part of the test unlike a windscreen. Without seeing the state of the hood its difficult to advise on a full replacement hood. If the beading around the rear screen is still intact then it may take a replacement window, that is of course if its the original zip in window. Can be a pain to get it zipped in correctly and a two man job. If you had a new hood put on thre are places that do it for circa £300. Jack Smith Trimmers at Swansea always has good reports from members, also a trimmers in Croydon has good feedback. Loads of posts on here that mention both. Swansea may be too far for you but some make a short stay there whilst the jobs done, it takes a day, be warned he gets booked up well in advance.

Thanks for this, to keep the outlay down I was thinking of a second hand hood, I reckon I have the patience to fit it, the beading is off in some places and there is a stiched repair already. If there's nothing drastic at mot time I can spend a bit more. Last mot it have the front suspension overhauled, bills to support too, it had been parked up most of the time since then, only a couple of minor advisories which I have covered off.

If the beading is dodgy it might be as well to budget on a replacement hood especially if you intend to keep the car, a second hand hood might be viable but its finding one that is in good condition thats going to be difficult given the age they will be now. Sounds like you sorted the suspension out and sorted the advisories you had so heres hoping you get a pass.

Its a shocker alright, before deciding on a full hood replacement have a good look at the material that tucks in under the beading, see if it can be tucked back in under the edge of the beading, good strong glue may be needed to get it to stay tucked in. If its freyed on its edge that may prevent it staying tucked in and be a decider on replacement or not. Replacement window going to be under £100 for a zip in, a new hood by one of the trimmers will have the window sewn in.

Rear screen not a testable item. That is why you have 2 exterior mirrors. I would expect an advisory for it, but its not as if you don't know about it.

Ì agree with Tony the rear window itself doesn't come into the test .
The car must ( for its age ) have a minimum of 2 obligatory mirrors one of which must be an offside .
So in your case the nearside would be the second one.
As Tony has says an advisory for the window will probably be issued as you have an interior mirror that doesn't provide a rear view so the tester will advise the window as an explanation why.

You would have to be very keen to save money or a never say no diyer to put a second-hand roof on. I'm both so I’ve done it

It’s likely to cost you say £150 for a roof. Which won’t be pristine. For £330 ish Jack Smith in Swansea will do a job and a half for you for a lovely new one.

In normal times I live half the week in Swansea. I’m unlikely to do another roof myself when Jack Smiths are literally on my doorstep and I’ve now seen first hand how good they are.
