In the past I already bypassed the headlight rheostat. In the last 2 days (when lights are on) the dash and interior lighting go on an off presumably due to a bad contract. If I play with the knob (no jokes now....) I can get the dash and interior light to flicker.
Can anyone save me some playing around?

I had this as well and just yesterday got my mechanic to swap the unit out with a replacement bought from Ebay, all good now.

Always taking a chance buying second hand from Ebay, I don't know if its possible to buy the unit new any more?

I examined the old unit and it was very dusty, might be worth taking the old one out giving it a dust and replacing before you buy another one?...2 screws I think to remove.

I've never seen inside one so don't know how accessible the innards are. It's unlikely to be worn unless you just spend your journeys twiddling with your knob. So maybe is just oxidation so a good clean with soapy water, blow dry and a good rub with a bit of WD40 might fix it.

Some people say vinegar or brown sauce. But don't leave it on long. It's pretty corrosive.

Ok - I opened it up and the plastic housing encasing the “plunger” was cracked. I’ll try contact spray as I look for a new one.
I assume the RHD and LHD electrics are identical… (obviously the air inlet is the mirror image)
PS - until the new one arrived 8 weeks later - I epoxied over the cracked and it worked fine.

New one £150 from Sopers. Just bought a new one a few weeks ago for a similar issue and the stat was bridged out so now have an expensive working switch that dims...

Ordered a new one from Sopers yesterday £140.81 with forum discount. Tried bridging the stat but was unable to get it to work successfully hence expensive new switch.

On ebay there are a few (together with the air vent and button) for as low as £40.

This was one of the first jobs I did. I took the chance and bought a second hand switch from eBay - £50.

There are a couple decent videos on you tube about how to remove and replace - I followed those: it was straight forward to do, took about 40 mins becuase I was taking my time and it worked perfectly.

My dash lighting was temperamental with the original switch. On taking it out, there was white powder everywhere - looks like the rheostat was physically degrading. Oxidation or vibration maybe.
