Continueing on the green theme Gary dropped his 2.8tu off for a total overhaul just like the previous zeds. Everything we can powder coat will get covered. Saturday we seemed to be on fire, I think it might of been the extra help from @mid life crisis in his work coveralls. We managed to get the car completely stripped. Annoyingly we forgot to take many photos so they’re a bit jumbled.

We had it on good authority this 2.8 went like no other 2.8 so we did a little investigating and have a hunch what it might be.

all the subframe split ready to be dropped into the coaters.

An empty under side. Waiting for some Mazza straps.

Our hunch as to why this 2.8 goes so well
Need to confirm serial numbers to know for sure

the first time a pair of shafts come out by hand. These have been out before.

Some sacrifices on the top end for more useable punch? Doing some diff work on this one as well @Lee? I got me a dti to check my backlash tomorrow as there’s a little play.
This diff is ok but I have plenty coming up. I’ve done two in the shed but need a propper way of doing them. We have so many zeds now clonking when changing gear. I have all the bits needed to do another diff, all will be revealed soon.

Looking forward to that. I’ve been doing a lot of reading lately of in prep of doing a diff rebuild as I thought it be rude not to while everything was striped out but first best check the specs before going ocd. Just awaiting on a plate and a looking at a way of measuring the rotational torque. I figure a foot pound dial wrench should suffice. Apologies for any take away from the build thread.

Watching with interest as my 2.8 doesn't like going into 1st or 5th at times and feels like it needs persuasion. Interested to know your opinion, but know its hard without actually seeing the car.

Already done the oil, made no difference to going into 1st or 5th. Looks like its the gearbox shift pins :(

Gary’s car progressed really well this Saturday. We saved all the work till Gary came down to play. We very nearly finished it today.

First up was cleaning up the diff and giving it some fresh oil. Removed the old paper gasket for a fresh one compliments of BMW.

Then normal service resumed assembling the subframe. Also rude not to fit a set of Mazza’s straps.

it’s funny, most owners at this point don’t want to drive their Zeds in the rain =))

Only an hour later she’s looking pretty all buttoned up.

Final bits to do are the brake lines and drill out the snapped exhaust studs, oh joy!

She will soon be ready for another 21 years of road use.
