I’ve posted elsewhere on here for the need of a local zed shed as I’m having starting and intermittent power problems with my 2.8, however speaking to (another) local mechanic the first thing he said to me was have I changed the cam sensors. When I said to him I had and used Meyle he suggested that I use BMW parts and aftermarket sensors CAN throw up the same faults.
Can anyone verify as to his suggestion....I always thought Meyle were good, although I did buy them from Amazon.

There have been a number of posts on forums that support this view although Meyle are generally good and OEM standard. Have you tried reading the codes to see if they are picking up any problems?

Wow mixed bag there - I was going to offer to read them for you as `I'm down the road in Chester' but also have the German version.
Are they historic codes or have you reset and they have re-appeared.

I’ve reset them but after a few days some have reappeared. The problem I have now is that the old windows laptop I was using to read them has given up so trying other options is proving difficult!!

The problem is that Meyle have 2 standards of part. Meyle HD for things like wishbones and these have a very good reputation. And Meyle standard which is more hit and miss. The camshaft sensors are probably Meyle standard and could be any old manufacturer's cr*p changing supplier from batch to batch. So one week someone says they are great (maybe they got a good deal on Bosch). The next someone says they are rubbish because they come from a garden shed in darkest China.

So what the mechanic is saying is 100% credible. Whether he is right or not on this occasion is another matter. But it would be very reasonable to replace them to find out.

The issue with BMW camshaft sensors is that they are not cheap. £100+ ea. I would be tempted to buy secondhand ones from a reputable ebay breaker and see if the issue goes away. I've done this before with success. Just send a query before you buy and ask if the parts were error code free on removal.

If the error goes away you might feel happier about splashing out £100 plus for new ones with BMW. Or you might just choose to take your chances and leave the secondhand ones in.

Of course if you still have the error you may be wondering if the secondhand parts were good. But it's better than spending out £100+ on BMW parts just to find out the error is still there.

However if the only errors you are getting are camshaft sensor errors then it's a pretty reasonable bet that's exactly what's wrong.

Have been down similar route - I now have OBD Check Torque on my phone - just needed to buy a cheap WIFI adaptor.
