Afternoon all,

was reading earlier on that BMW are completely dropping manual transmissions from M140 & M240's from July, automatic only and this will also apply to 3 & 4 series! so, if you prefer to get a manual car and looking for a new car, better be quick! :coolsteer)

also, the new X3 M40i will also get a power reduction!!!

I am happy with my auto, so no issue for me ;)

I can't believe there's no room for manual cars in the market. They're not the first to do this but I can't be the only person who would be put off by only being available with paddles........?
 
It's called progress I suppose. Wouldn't worry me anyhow.

Also very happy with my auto and when it is in manual it is very good. The trend to improve efficiency is to increase the number of ratios so that the engine operates in it's most efficient range so with 8 ratios on the auto you will be forever changing gear driving about town etc.
The bmw box is a torque converter and the slip is not noticeable.
 
Much prefer the stick shift on the BMW auto to change than the paddles. Not a manual but just sliding the stick over to the left makes you concentrate more. Paddles on that and the Disco (no manual on that for some years) are ok for the odd change but takes a great deal more getting used too.
That said, love the auto’s but still have a manual to drive too.
I can understand why dropping the choice is disappointing though. You’re more connected with the oily bits.
 
I agree with those who think they need to have manual for being more involved but for driving to/from work, sitting in traffics, auto is much preferred! Also, some might have tried auto's when they were only 3 speed and not the 8 speed ZF one's! But taking the choice from the consumer is another issue
 
in an auto at present as big and daft 5 decided it time not to run bin with BMW 21 days
they gave me a 2 series auto box great up and down the car park called M6
 
I have a Honda CR-V mk1 which is an auto and to be honest it has been mostly pleasurable to tootle around in but I would not wish to have an auto box on my zed as I like the engagement of the manual throughout B roads. Would be interesting if my opinion would change trying out a newer model with a autobox. Once I eventually finish rebuilding my ///M I might take it to a dealer and get a test drive on one of the newer zeds to compare and for laughs what they offer on a part ex.
 
I wouldn't have a manual in my new 3 series

The 8 speed auto is amazing
 
I drive a lot of cars at work as we collect and deliver and some modern auto boxes are tragic, the kick down takes an age, however BMW eclipse them all, put it in sport and oh my god how responsive is that gear box,
 
I stopped looking at new mercs when they dropped a manual transmission, shame BMW are going the same way. Need to look elsewhere for a drivers car now. Lots of M badges on non M engined cars and automatics, the world has changed. :(
 
Don't mind either for general driving but much prefer a manual gearbox with a gear stick for my fun car as I feel more involved in the process.

My next daily drive will be auto, but then I have the Z for proper driving ;)

Agreed. I am not sure if the X1 ever changes gear , the 8 speed box is so smooth. Z3 is for pleasure ,but not today roads far to busy,pity with the weather. The gear change in the Z3 was vastly improved after discarding the very old oil and inserting Redline from Opie oils.

I have one of each type of trans and they all have their merits. The ZF8 is an amazing 'box. The DCT7 is just sublime and the Manual trans in the Zed is... OK.

Saying that the 6 speed Getrag in my E46 M3 was an agricultural lump. Much better when you took it by the scruff, crap at pootling about town.
 
Got the ZF 8 speed box in the disco. Smooth as silk, especially after having had the fluid changed.

I had bought a '06 used CR-V for my wife a few years ago and it was a 5 speed manual. I had to teach her how to drive it. They told me it was the last manual they made and all those after it were auto. After a week or so, my wife could handle it pretty well but told me she wouldn't drive it as she was too scared of being stopped on a hill and not be able to start off in first gear without sliding backwards and hitting the car behind her. She said she'd take the bus to work. I had to sell it. I should have kept it and let her take the bus. It wouldn't have been long before she got tired of doing that and go back to the car. Two or three days on the road and she wouldn't even think about any problems driving it. My mistake..............Frankie
