2001 Z3 3.0i 68k bought last week, pristine condition. Drove home 10 hrs NC to Ga 10 days ago. 4 days ago ABS & Transmission (auto w/ Steptronic) lamps stayed on, no flashing. Local, well respected, garage could not connection their diagnostics to ABS Z3 module. On way home lamps went out and have operated normally since. Garage recommended BMW for further diagnostics. Yesterday while driving the Tachometer failed for an hour or so but started working again. Any thoughts?

I would check the connections on the speed sensor mounted in the Diff. casing. I periodically had this light come on on my 2000 Z3 2.0 Auto (same gear box) I could clear the light by connecting to the OBD2 under the dashboard. I also had this on my 2003 Z4 3,0 Auto soon after I got it, the car had been stood for some time. Since having been used regularly this light hasn't come back for the last 4 years. I wouldn't worry unduly about it.

Tony, Thanks for the warm welcome. Have another possible problem but thought I would drive it again to be sure it's not my imagination. But since you mentioned the diff casing I believe I hear something clunking, not in the trans but a looseness with a slight "Bang" when shifting in 4th or 5th. I notice this very slight jerk or bump occurring in automatic but I have not tried it enough in manual to know if it happens there also. Also, could the malfunction of the tachometer possibly be related?

It is not uncommon for the Tacho to "drop out" sometimes, you can get defects on the instruments through dry joints in soldered connections. Try locating the clunk by driving it in Sport Manual, the sport mode does give you more in the way of engine braking and might show it up more clearly.

There may be some info on this thread which might help.

To talk to the ABS module on the Z3, you have to connect to the 20 pin plug under the bonnet/hood. There is a 20 pin to BD2 adapter available. This plug talks to all modules in the car.

The under dash OBD2 plug only talks to the engine computer (DME) and the Auto Transmission module (EGS).

Many Indy's who do not work on older BMW's do not know about the 20 pin plug and what the OBD2 plug is limited to talk to.
