Started the strip down today ready for a full repaint.

Something strange happened to the bonnet in since the really hot summer so decided to do the whole car as there were quite a few other things, thin paint, mirrors again, odd bits a poor prep from when it was painted after the hailstorm 7 years ago.

Good stuff mate, the bonnet will more then likely need stripping down to bare metal where the cracks have appeared or at least down to the layer that has let go, it could be some type of thermo plastic acrylic, it moves when hot, its ok on its own but will not tolerate anything else on top of it, I don't think its used anymore

Hi Sean

Thanks for that we were wondering what caused it. Yes it is going back to bare metal.

Hi Brian, this is great stuff, can't wait to see what it looks like when done, have you replaced your windscreen yet?

Think mine will be going in soon too, I've finally sourced the widebody wings and rear bumper from our @Davyhoogy a few weeks ago (long drive to get it though!)

I like that term refresh and I use it myself. I just like to have a nice driver. So refreshes make more sense to me than trying to do a concours restoration. I'd never keep it spotless.

I have a checklist for the mechanical refreshes I do around the suspension and brakes. I just priced my latest version up and it's £1,800 in parts including shot-blasting/powder-coating. But I do go to town in that area.

Good job the engines and gearboxes are bullet proof on these things and need relatively little work. Mine usually get water pump and thermostat and that's about it. Although I am going to start doing vanos seals and CCV system too.

I've avoided the need for a full respray so far thankfully.

There's a lot of iffy/nameless CCV kits around on ebay. But I'm going to try a Meyle. My Titan Silver 2.2 I did the engine swap on chews through oil so I'm hoping a replacement CCV or failing that the Vanos seal will fix it.

I've read that the CCV can cause a lot of oil loss but never read that about the VANOS, by the way the VANOS is a doddle on the twin cam

Been slow progress as it is a back burner job.

I've cleaned up all the bits we've taken off. Derusted the bolts for the wheel liners etc and repainted.

Sills have been cleaned and couples of rust holes filled with weld and treated.

Started on the bonnet which has multiple layers of paint so could be the cause of the paint cracking.

More stripping to do next week and order the replacement bits seals and trim clips. When it was painted 6 years ago they must have broken the clips on the kidney grills as they had been glued back in and were a pain to get out.

Bonnet stripped now and ready for primer.
I've been stripping other bits off today mirrors, window seals from the doors, 3rd brake light and all the wiring from the boot lid. As long as I can remember where all the bits go.
Ordered some clips and things from BMW yesterday and prices were better than eBay.

Wow, fantastic job Brian. Are you doing the spraying yourself or just the prepping?

Bonnet is in primer now.

The wipers arms had caught on the bonnet at some time in the past so repainted them and pleased how they turned out.

The kidney grill clips had been broken and when it was painted 6 years ago they glued them back in!!!. I took the chrome rings off and found some inner parts but they weren't chromed as mine were. Found a chrome paint pen and did the slats and pleased with them as well.
