Hi,
I am new to BMW and am trying to get my head around what parts work across various engine models.
Just bought a 1999 BMW Z3 2.0i E36, I need a new timing chain.
Called BMW parts and service they don't make the timing chains kits/parts anymore and did not know the following.

Are the timing chains, tensioners and chain guides unique to each engine e.g M52B20, M52B24, M52TUB20?
Do all M52 engines use the same basic engine configuration with only capacity changes and engine mounts?
Do any timing chain for M52B20, M52B24, etc engines work work on M52TUB20?

Help would be much appreciated, thank you in advance.

Hello,
have you checked the realoem page?
enter your vin 7 last digits and browse through all parts.
it appears that the timing chain is common btween many engines.

The above is a random search, for vin specific just go to the first page and enter your vin.
it will guide you to the correct part and its applications.

I would be very surprised if you need a new chain for an M50/2/4 engine.

But yes there is one chain for all, still available from BMW.

Chain 11311432176

Guide rail 11311726480

Guide tensioner 11311703717

Or you can Google Febi who will sell you the same thing - it's all made by Jwis anyway.
