I have hell of a racket coming from Viscous fan area but sounds more like a bearing rumble.
Clutch probably woken from its' slumbers of many years in this hot weather and seems to have stuck in the engaged position.
Will take it off later today and run engine without to check it's not water pump - although Meyle pump has only done 26k. Have had the `stethoscope' over other components and they seem ok.
Any recommendations on replacement brands - there seem to be a few out there but mixed reviews.
Don't have A/c fan so need to sort it. Try to keep my car original so not interested in fan delete mod.
Did a 600mi road trip to south coast last week and car was perfect - this suddenly started after a short local run.
Cheers

I replaced mine a couple of years ago, I went with Meyle, about £50 IIRC.

Thanks - you did well - I'm 110k miles behind you. Only time I've known it work in anger was in a traffic jam in 38deg Verona years ago - noise was a cross between a jet take-off and and an engine blow-up!

My advice is as you have said a number of varying price brands out there buy a decent priced one as I know a forum member who bought a cheaper one and it didn't perform as required.

Mis-placed faith - took fan off and rumbling continued. Belt off and water pump pulley wobbling about - probably close to full collapse - bit disappointing after 26k. Bugger and lots of other words:mad:
Now sourcing new pump and will do stat and viscous fan as well while it's apart.

That's a shame as usually a good aftermarket part for German cars

Yep agree- but being a glutton for punishment I've ordered another as with advancing years it will take me awhile to clock up another 26k.
One thing that bothers me is that I fitted an INA tensioner pulley 5 years ago and when I came to release the belt it was seized. Now freed but may have been over tensioned.
