Dear friends,
I am trying to make a valve adjustment. I just opened a valve cover but not sure how to adjust the clearance. Can someone advise me the instruction?

Regards,
Kenny

The M44 uses hydraulic valve adjusters (HVA) to keep the valve clearances within a limited working range.

Addtional question, please. My M44 has the Hydraulic valve lifter which has no maintenance? I check the GAP but it is almot zero clearance and I could not measure it. If it is too tight, we should consider the replacement of the valve lifter?

A hydraulic Valve Adjuster or as we call them in the US a "lifter" uses oil to reduce the clearance in the valve train. It does this with engine oil under pressure pushing the inner part of the lifter up or out, this makes the lifter longer and in the engine reduces the valve clearance gap. If the lifter stops working then usually the lifters are replaced.

IMHO- Lifters don't often go out, they usually clog because of dirty oil or contaminants mucking up the works.
I am not sure if BMW lifters can be cleaned so the best case would be yes to replace them.

Is there a noise from the engine? A rattle tapping noise?. Before doing anything I would put some “flush” in the engine oil and run it as stated on the tin. Drain the oil, put new oil and filter in PLUS a tin of Hydraulic Valve Lifter Concentrate. Cured the tappet rattle on my 2000 2.0 Z3. A whole lot less expensive than 16 new hydraulic lifters.

Tony.
