ok, coil on plug - like this
get rid of that stupidly expensive coil and lead set up, and gain some throttle response.

Heath Robinson
Adj: An invention, machine or process that is makeshift, fragile, poorly engineered or overly elaborate.

William Heath Robinson (1872-1944) was a British Cartoonist well known for humourous illustrations of fantasical inventions involving large numbers of components, often in order to acheive a very simple purpose.
Eg) "My new customised mousetrap, made from the contents of a kitchen cupboard, string, sticky tape and old lawnmower parts was finally complete. It did look a bit Heath Robinson, but it might just work."

you may think that but - why did all other bmw after the e36 have these, even up to this day, i think this is a good mod and has been done on loads of 318s m44 and m43, have you seen the price of a coil pack and leads, what a rip off for something obsolete.

If it works, is a cheaper alternative and is reliable it gets my vote Jason.

yes it works, its cheaper but i was wondering if anyone else had done this in a zed, its quite common on the 318, my coil pack and leads are original parts so are 19 years old

If they're still working ok I'd leave well alone TBH. Not many cars produced with "coil packs" now most are on individual pencil coils, which means you can replace them individually if need be. Does it give better throttle response?

errr individual coils are what these are tony, at the mo i have the usual coil pack and leads which are 19 years old and im getting mis fire codes in inpa, im not saying these codes are coil related but is highly probable considering there age

yes they supposedly do give better response, to be fair the reporters of better response do so after replacing a dodgy coil pack, after all how can a few wires actually make that much differences? (this is my view, and not that of everyone with a 318)

Yes, I can see that they are individual coils Jason, my comment was for the benefit of those who might not know the difference ???

So, as I asked, does it give better throttle response?

sorry tony, mis understood. supposedly so, but then compared to what exactly?, if you have a dodgy coil pack then yes switching over would give better results, but no more that just replacing a dodgy pack in the first place. you know what these forums are like - omg it has made a huge difference, - errrr well yes if your original pack was errr foooooked then yes it would feel better. but does it actually improve things. from an age point of view then if it can inprovde things at a lower price and be an improvement then it must be a win win ? or is it, this is why im asking.

Well, if you have a misfire you need to do something or at least you can damage the cat with unburnt fuel going through it. If it's a cheaper option then it has to be worth doing.

nice idea... it looks a lot simpler than that stupid coil pack mine is 19 year old too and did have a few misfire codes... but seems to have settled down a bit now....
