Having had the suction tube in and out several times for various jobs, the foam tube and spiral wire is in a grim condition at end connectors and needs replacing - will probably fall apart next time.

BMW price for replacement is ~£60 for item 3 on http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=CH72-EUR---Z3-BMW-Z3 1.9&diagId=13_0417#13711743351 but I only need the actual tube.

I'm thinking of a modification along the lines of replacing with insulation wrapped plastic pipe if I can find suitable diameter and fittings. Has anybody fitted an alternative tubing - ideas welcome please?

I don't really want to fit new air filter system.

You may be able to make the pipe up from something else but it may cost more than the original do ylu have a picture of the actual part in the engine bay ?

Doesn't look like the worst thing to find something else to do the job, but as Ant mentions you may well end up spending more time and money on the process.

Are you thinking along the lines of something like this, but insulated?

This what i thought as an alternative but as the pipe you are wanting to replace is what looks like socket fitted both ends any thing you use will look aftermarket. As its the ends that have deteriorated unless you can find a push fit solution its not going to be easy.

Not yet - will try and take one later. Basically the existing tube is a soft foam outer blanket with a thin wire spiral insert. The spiral twists into grooves on the plastic end pieces. The foam gradually breaks down on the bends and insert - this is accelerated the more times you take the shroud off for maintenance work - which I have done many times!.
Just been to B&Q (old f***s Wednesday) to get some other stuff but also got some duct tape to temporarily wrap it.

That would do Gary - I had a length from a old tumble drier and tried it but it's too wide.

Ah - the elephant's truck?

I have an original available off my breaker if required. Would need to check condition.
