Hi All,

Long time since, I have been here, and sorry to go over old ground, but does anybody have any data relating to the M43 as fitted to the Z3 2001 year ?

thanks

Hi Both,
Recently acquired a non start z3 m43 engine of 2001 vintage, fuel drained, and replaced and finally have it running, having been laid up since 2020.
Although a bit lumpy I have put thus down to being idle for so long, what I'm looking for is information relating to the fuel system, ie injector pressure, pump pressure / rail pressure
Any information would be appreciated
Regards
Sean

On the m43 generally that side of stuff is usually quite reliable.
Does the car have decent fresh fuel first of all as unleaded goes off a bit with time.
Plugs on m43 iridium 60k change
Vacuum pipes a big issue .
Firstly closely check the main rubber boots from air filter box to throttle body for cracks and splitting.
Then it starts to get more awkward without dismantling.
I will put pictures up in the morning just its dark and wet just now up here in Scotland and my zeds are outside.
So off the main pipes you will see around half way along another smaller hose is joined to it and runs under the manifold check that for same
This then goes to a piece that splits it into 4 ( this usually ok but check as well) then there is another 4 rubber hoses off this one to each injector again check for cracks and splitting.
Another piece of hose to check is at the front of rocker cover is the fuel rail pressure regulator it has a small vacuum hose that has a t piece and runs into throttle body and cant remember where else till i look 😳.
Start with that lot before anything else

These will help a bit Stephen.

Any other questions just ask .
Also a code read would be good to see if any fault
To do a proper full diagnostic you should use the 20 pin round obd port in the engine bay ( 16 to 20 pin adapter readily available on ebay ) the 16 pin under the column only allows limited access.

It will be something like this ( first one i found )

Your zed is a face-lift so a bit more usable in the diagnostic department.

The m43 has a far better cat than the m44
If yours after Jan 01 will have to have a better quality cat and aftermarket need to be type approved.

Oh OK, looks all good in that department, I'm more versed with high speed diesel engines, so any info is greatly appreciated.

Will post some pics soon, did a head gasket on a m44 going back a couple of years ago, and let it go soon after which I regretted.
Hence this purchase

Your Autel scanner plugged into the round under bonnet socket should do a decent job of reading codes on your car, just need the 20pin to 16pin obd2 cable changer as described earlier. The M43 engine is no different to the other models when it comes to them requiring a good sealed vaccum system across the engine from Maf to exhaust. Check out all rubber and plastic vaccum hoses across the engine for splits or cracks, replace any that are found holed or cracked. Keep up with the service requirements and it will be quite happy. Since the car is newish to you always good to do a full fluids change, engine gearbox and diff then you know whats in it and their conditions. Be prepared to put a new water pump and thermostat and a new radiator top up tank as preventative maintenance.

Hi Colb,

Yes, plenty of areas for potential loss of vaccum, with 20 plus year old hoses, head gaskets been done on this one previously as well as waterpump so hopefully should be OK,
